Background: Originally a trainee at Southend United but moved into non-League football to begin his football career before being picked up by Brentford in the summer of 2003 aged 19. The younsgter made his Football League debut in The Bees Division Two game at Colchester on 30th September 2003 and opened his goalscoring account when he bagged a hat-trick during a 7-1 victory over Gainsborough in a FA Cup qualifying tie on 8th November 2003. His first League goal came against Colchester in the return at Griffin Park on 12th April 2004 and his only other goal that season came against Wycombe, also at Griffin Park, on 24th April 2004.
The following season saw Harrold struggle to find his goalscoring touch, although he did score on his debuts for both Dagenham & Redbridge and Grimbsy Town during short loan spells away from Griffin Park. At the end of the 2004/5 season Harrold moved to Yeovil Town where the season ahead produced a return of 9 goals in 30 'League One' starts. Starting the following season at Yeovil, Harrold returned to Southend on transfer deadline day August 2006. However, he struggled to hold a regular place in the starting line-up and after making 52 League appearances in two years and scoring three times was transfer listed in the summer of 2008. Manager Peter Taylor revealed he'd been tracking the player since he'd been listed, commenting, "I've seen Matt play a lot of times for Southend and I really like him. "He's got a lot of quality and he's got all the things you want from a big striker so I'm really pleased to have signed him." Meanwhile, Harrold told the Wanderers official website on the day of his move to Adams Park, "It's been a tough year for me, I've not played as much as I'd like but I'm delighted to get a fresh start and cant wait to get going.". The striker also explained of the lead up to deal on transfer deadline Monday 1st September 2008, saying, "I heard of Wycombe's interest a while ago, but it went down to the wire and there were a couple of other clubs interested. This was the place I wanted to be though, so I didn't sleep much on Sunday night - it was pretty worrying because I wasn't sure what was happening, I was just relieved when I got pulled out of training and told that the move was on." And he hoped that his move to Wycombe would set his football career back on track, adding, "I'm a hard working player, perhaps I haven't scored as much as I'd like to have done previously but I think I've got goals in me. Peter [Taylor] is such a highly thought of manager, I am willing to learn and I'm just looking forward to the challenge."
