Nationwide League Division Two WYCOMBE v Wigan Athletic
Tuesday 21st March 2000
Division Two
After Saturday's rear-guard action against Stoke at The Britannia Stadium on Saturday, injury-hit Wycombe finally came unstuck against promotion chasing Wigan at Adams Park on Tuesday evening. With all the talk centering around the shock move of Matt Lawrence to Millwall, Wycombe's five man defence held out until the 59th minute when a slip up let in the visitors and from then on their was no way back as Wigan became the first side to do the double over The Wanderers this season.
In front of Wycombe's lowest League gate of the season, Scott Green burst through on 11 minutes on the Wigan right but Martin Taylor was quick off his line to block. Wycombe's first and only corner of the half on 19 minutes saw Holsgrove head over at the far post from Brown's centre. Three minutes later Andy Lidell's right wing ball was flicked just wide by Simon Haworth.
Wigan finished the half strongly with recent £112,000 signing from Barnsley, Neil Redfearn, attempting an overhead kick on 31 minutes that was deflected fractionally wide of the target. On the stroke of half-time the same player saw a close range effort blocked by Taylor to frustrate the travelling side again.
Half-time Wycombe 0 Wigan 0
Wycombe's plan of holding Wigan finally cracked when a free-kick from the Wigan right was sliced towards his own goal by Dannie Bulman and when the ball broke, it was Arjan De Zeeuw who was on hand to put the ball past Taylor from close range.
Wycombe immediately switched to 4-3-3 but still failed to create a serious effort on goal while Wigan were content to sit on their lead. The only highlight of the game from the Wycombe point of view was the return of Andy Baird when he replaced Lee Holsgrove moments after Wigan had taken the lead. He put himself about and eventually created a half chance in the 89th minute but fired the ball over the crossbar. The visitors confirmed victory in stoppage time when Terry Cooke centered from the right bye-line for Simon Haworth to stab home from eight yards.
