WYCOMBE WANDERERS v PETERBOROUGH UNITED
Saturday 31st July 1999 - Friendly

The final first team friendly of the 1999/2000 season saw Wycombe stroll past takes Barry Fry's Peterborough United by 2 goals to nil. In pitch temperatures approaching 100 degrees, this was never going to be a high energy game but Wycombe looked the fitter side throughout. Paul Emblen opened the scoring on 12 minutes when he tucked the ball in from 12 yards and neatly controlling the ball with his first touch. Sean Devine looked sharp up front again but Sanchez gave Jermaine McSporran a run out in the second half as his replacement. McSporran nearly increased Wycombe's lead 10 minutes into the second-half when he powered through from midfield before unleashing a low shot that came back off the post. The ball flew out to Steve Brown who some how managed to miss the target from less than six yards. McSporran's non-stop running finally paid off with three minutes left when he scored from a similar position to his earlier attempt.
Sanchez fielded the same starting line-up for both home First Team friendlies and with the excpetion of the suspended Paul Emblen it will be odds on that this will be close to the team that is used against Burnley. The return to fitness of Jason Cousins and Mo Harkin will also give him options while McSporran's efforts in the friendlies should see a place on the five man bench or even in the staring line-up if Andy Baird hasn't recovered from a leg injury picked up in the game at Oxford City.
Final Score Wycombe 2 Peterborough 0

HAYES v WYCOMBE WANDERERS XI
Friday 30th July 1999 - Friendly

A Wycombe reserve XI travelled to Conference side Hayes on Friday evening and were well beaten by three goals to nil. Wycombe had the better of the opening exchanges with Mo Harkin again the highlight of an otherwise un-inspiring display. Hayes took the lead on 38 minutes when Nathan Bunce headed home following a free-kick from the right. Jason Goodliffe increased their lead ten minutes into the second-half with another powerful header at the far post following a cross from the left. The home side completed the scoring on 74 minutes when Neil Trebble thumped the ball in from a free-kick given against Wycombe for a back pass. Danny Bulman came closest to scoring for Wycombe when he forced a one-handed save from Paul Gothard in the Hayes goal. The game ended with Jason Cousins being 'substituted' at the request of the referee for an off the ball incident.
Sad to report that Hayes charged the extortionate price of £7 adults/£4 for OAPS and children to stand for this game and £1 extra to sit. Apparently these will be their normal Conference prices this season. All in all makes the prices at Wycombe look good value.
Final Score Hayes 3 Wycombe 0
WYCOMBE TEAM:Westhead (sub HT Williams), Cousins (sub 88 Gray returned), Wraight, Rogers, Leach, Gray (sub 61 Thompson), Bulman, Lee, Harkin (sub HT Jordi), Senda (sub HT Miles), Kinsey Att:400 approx
WYCOMBE WANDERERS v NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Wednesday 28th July 1999 - Friendly

Wycombe beat an almost unrecognisable Forest side with ease in the first friendly at Adams Park of the 1999/2000 season. A fairly sparse crowd saw Wycombe wearing the new quartered 'home' kit for the first time with a good percentage of the crowd also donning their new replicas.
Paul Emblen, playing in his new roaming forward role, had the first real chance of the game on 26 minutes when he saw a snap shot tipped over by the Forest 'keeper but it wasn't until the closing ten minutes of the first half that the game picked up pace. Michael Simpson saw a 30 yard free-kick saved before Sean Devine continued his outstanding goalscoring record by sending a sweet 20 yarder past the Forest 'keeper from the left edge of the penalty area on 37 minutes. Minutes later Carroll played in Brown from the left but the shot was forced away for a corner. Simpson then saw a first time shot flash over after Emblen had set him up. Martin Taylor had to be alert to block a Forest breakaway five minutes into the second-half before Wycombe doubled their lead when Emblen slotted home from close range on 70 minutes. The obligatory mass of substitutions followed with many of the fringe players getting their chance to claim a first team slot ahead of the opening league game against Burnley on Saturday 7th August.
Final Score Wycombe 2 Forest 0
WYCOMBE TEAM:Taylor (sub Osborn 85), Lawrence, Vinnicombe, McCarthy (sub 85 Rogers), Bates, Simpson (sub 78 Senda), Carroll (sub 65 Holsgrove), Ryan (sub 65 McSporran), Devine (sub 78 Lee), Brown (sub 78 Harkin), Emblen Att:1500 approx
THAME UNITED v WYCOMBE WANDERERS XI
Tuesday 27th July 1999 - Friendly

Jason Cousins played his first game in a Wycombe shirt for nearly four months as a Wycombe Reserve XI lost 1-0 to last season's FA Vase semi-finalists. The home side had the better of the first half - hitting the post early on after Mark Osborn had misjudged a low shot to his right. Wycombe's best spell came shortly after the break with Harkin and Bulman combining on the left and trialist Andy Kinsey's header being pushed onto the roof of the net. Thame responded when Liam Herbert saw his long range shot tipped over by Osborn before Ronnie Joe got a memorable winner with ten minutes left - sending a screaming shot from 25 yards into the top right corner of the Wycombe net.
Final Score Thame United 1 Wycombe 0
WYCOMBE TEAM:Osborne, Wraight, Cousins (sub 69 Gray), Rogers, Leach, Lee, Holsgrove (sub 55 Jordi), Bulman, Harkin, Senda, McSporran (sub HT Kinsey) Att:300 approx
OXFORD CITY v WYCOMBE WANDERERS
Wednesday 21st July 1999 - Friendly

Steve Brown - two goals in pre-season friendly at Oxford - photo Chairboys on the NetThree late goals saw a full strength Wycombe side finally overcome Ryman League Oxford City on Wednesday evening. Wycombe dominated proceedings but suffered in front of goal. The home side were nearly gifted a goal seven minutes into the second-half when Martin Taylor sliced a clearance straight to a City forward but he made ammends with two first class blocks. Jamie Bates saw a screaming drive hit the cross bar on 65 minutes before Wycombe took the lead six minutes later through a Michael Simpson free-kick. Steve Brown added to the score on 75 minutes when he was quickest to react to a loose ball on the left side of the box. Three before the final whistle Brown added his second and Wycombe's third with the best goal of the game - dancing in from the left before placing a low shot past the 'keeper.
Final Score Oxford City 0 Wycombe 3
WYCOMBE TEAM:Taylor (sub 70 Osborn), Lawrence, Vinnicombe, McCarthy, Brown, Bates, Ryan, Carroll (sub 70 Holsgrove), Baird (sub 67 McSporran), Devine (sub 55 Emblen), Simpson Att:350 approx
MARLOW v WYCOMBE WANDERERS XI
Tuesday 20th July 1999 - Friendly

Mo Harkin scores the only goal of the game at Marlow - photo Chairboys on the Net Maurice Harkin scored the only goal of the game to give a Wycombe XI victory over Marlow at Oak Tree Road. Harkin, playing his first game for eleven months, scored after just five minutes with a low accurate shot from about 20 yards. Lawrie Sanchez watched the game from the stand and must have been impressed with Harkin's performance on a difficult surface. The Wycombe side were rarely troubled by Marlow whose best chance came after 30 minutes when James Pritchard contrived to fire over an empty net.
Final Score Marlow 0 Wycombe 1
WYCOMBE TEAM:Westhead (sub HT Osborne), Wraight, Beeton, Leach, Holsgrove, Rogers (sub 66 Jordi), Lee, Harkin, McSporran (sub HT Senda), Bulman (sub 74 Gray), Thompson Att:250 approx
