Nationwide League Division Two WYCOMBE v Oldham
Saturday 11th March 2000
Division Two
This mid table encounter ended all square as injury hit Wycombe played out their first 0-0 under Lawrie Sanchez at Adams Park. With Sean Devine missing with a groin strain it was left to Jermaine McSporran to provide the inspiration up front along side full debutant Richard Thompson. McSporran's speed was the key threat to an Oldham side keen to go one better the 2-2 draw at Boundary Park back in November.
McSporran went close with a 20 yard effort within the first minute but Oldham responded when Craig Dudley caught out Mark Rogers only for Martin Taylor to block. Thompson's cross from the right on 10 minutes was met by McSporran at the near post but Kelly pushed the ball. From the resulting corner Steve Brown ballooned the ball into the fields behind the Valley End - the first of six occasions that the sides were to send the ball out of the ground.
Oldham's best chance of the half came on 19 minutes. Lee Holsgrove lost out in midfield to Lee Duxbury then John Sheridan's fierce low drive needed Martin Taylor to get down quick to his left before grabbing the ball at the second attempt. Wycombe's best spell of the half came around the half-hour mark when McSporran raced down the left before being cut out in the Oldham penalty area - the claims for a Wycombe penalty were waved away by referee Dermot Gallagher. A minute later Mo Harkin's 20 yard effort was spectacularly tipped away by Gary Kelly in the Oldham goal.
Half-time 0-0
Oldham dominated the early stages of the second-half with Steve Whitehall and Sheridan the dangermen. For Wycombe the back four held together well, with Dave Carroll having another outstanding game in the right back role. However, Wycombe got caught out down the Oldham right on 64 minutes when Paul Rickers' bye-line cross saw Whitehall's header picked out by Taylor at the near post. Sanchez threw on Bulman and Senda for the final 20 minutes, although the manager's choice of withdrawing Harkin was not popular in some quarters. Wihtin a minute of the substitution Oldham's Mark Hotte gave his 'keeper a scare with a headed backpass that nearly brought a own-goal. However, it was McSporran again who had the better chances to take all three points for Wycombe. On 80 minutes his searching run from midfield took him into the Oldham box but his low shot shot inches wide of the far post. Two minutes later the same player blasted the ball yards over The Hillbottom Road End stand after Vinnicombe's low cross from the left. In stoppage time McSporran sent another ball out of the stadium following Jason Cousins' free-kick from the left side.
Saturday's point saw Wycombe climb to 12th place in the table with 45 points from 35 games. Wycombe now have a tough series of games starting next Saturday (18th March) with the visit to Stoke City.
