Berks and Bucks Senior Cup
3rd Round
WYCOMBE v Chesham Utd
Tuesday 4th January 2000
Wycombe had a fairly easy passage into the next round of the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup with a 4-1 victory over Ryman League side 4-1 at Adams Park. Chesham had postponed a League game the previous day in preparation for this tie while Wycombe treated this strictly as a reserve fixture.
Richard Thompson scored a hat-trick while newly signed Matt Brady scored his first goal in a Wycombe shirt. Chesham started well and Mark Rogers had to be alert to clear off the line in the opening five minutes. Thompson opened the scoring on 13 minutes when he crashed in a left-footed drive and it was 2-0 three minutes later when Brady tucked the ball into an empty net after a deep right wing cross from Senda was forced down by Thompson. Chesham replied on 23 minutes when Martin Fox struck a low shot past Mark Westhead in the Wycombe goal after Paul McCarthy had headed clear to the edge of the penalty area. Brady continued to show some promise in a left sided position. On 28 minutes he saw a effort from just outside the box fly over the Chesham bar while eight minutes before the break a first time effort from a Senda cross was tipped over by Tynan Scope in the General's goal.
Wycombe switched 'keepers during the break and within three minutes Mark Osborn showed his potential when he reacted brilliantly to a deflected shot from Terry Bowes. That saved proved crucial as Wycombe wrapped the game up with two controversial goals. The first came on 54 minutes when Thompson beat the offside trap before curling in a shot from the right corner of the box. Chesham's complaints were waved away along with their coach who was ordered to the stand by match referee Mr Hermitage after he had disputed the decision with the linesman. Eight minutes later Thompson found himself in the clear again, the flag stayed down and 'Thomo' nipped in past the 'keeper and watched the ball trickle over the line. The Chesham bench literally waved the white flag after this goal (actually it was a handkerchief and brought the match officials into the fray again to calm things down). Wycombe could have increased the final margin on 65 minutes when Mo Harkin chipped in a free-kick that thudded against the upright while three minutes later a generally disappointing Senda blazed over from inside the box. The game ended on a sour point for Wycombe when Martyn Lee picked up a needless booking when he kicked the ball away after he was pulled up for a challenge on Bowes.
Wycombe travel to Thatcham in the next round.
