Nationwide League Division Two WYCOMBE v Bury
Saturday 26th February
Division Two
Sean Devine provided the perfect remedy for the recent home reverse to Oxford United as his hat-trick saw off Bury at Adams Park. After starting with Keith Ryan in the centre-forward role, Wycombe struggled in the early stages and could have gone behind with Adrian Littlejohn and Chris Billy going close for the visitors and Mark Rogers having to clear off the line. Rogers had come in for the injured Matt Lawrence and played in the centre of defence with Jason Cousins playing at right-back.
It was around the half-hour mark that Wycombe finally worked an opening after Ryan dropped back into midfield. Wycombe's first corner on 27 minutes was quickly followed by Steve Brown firing over while Devine scuffed a shot as he made for goal on the left side. Devine was also involved on 38 minutes but his left wing cross was cut-out before Dave Carroll could take advantage. A minute later Carroll saw Shakers' 'keeper Paddy Kenny tip a goalbound effort around for a corner but from the next attack Wycombe had taken the lead. Carroll pushed the ball wide to McSporran on the left and when his bye-line cross fell to Devine, Wycombe's top scorer broke his six-game goal drought by toe-poking the ball home through a crowd of players.
Half-time Wycombe 1 Bury 0
Wycombe pressed the advantage early in the second-half. First Jermaine McSporran broke in from the right only to see the angle narrow and Kenny save the near post. Bury responded but Keith Ryan blocked Dean Barrick's 10 yard effort in the 52nd minute. Four minutes later Jason Cousins was lucky not to receive a caution when he steamed into Paul Barnes deep in the left corner of the Wycombe half. Mark Rogers was trying to shield the ball while lying on his back before Cousins closed in on his suicide mission. That incident was quickly forgotten when Wycombe doubled their lead in the 58th minute. A deep cross from Devine out on the left found McSporran at the far post where Steve Redmond's push earned The Wanderers a penalty. Devine cooly slotted home the spot-kick having missed his last attempt at Burnley back in December. The 200 or so travelling fans saw The Shakers miss two good chances to reduce the arrears in a brief spell of Bury pressure before Wycombe sealed the points with seven minutes left of normal time. A quickly taken free-kick by substitute Mo Harkin found Devine on the far side of the penalty area in acres of space and he flicked the ball in with ease to complete his three goal haul. Harkin then saw a 25 yard shot tipped over by Kenny to as the Irishman looked out to impress. A bad day for The Shakers was confirmed in injury time when, after Andy Baird was penalised for pushing Paul Reid in the back, Andy Preece saw his spot-kick saved low to Martin Taylor's left and the Wycombe 'keeper was also on hand to block the follow-up.
Wycombe climb one place in the table to 11th with 43 points from 32 games.
