NATIONWIDE Division Two Scunthorpe United v WYCOMBE
Saturday 14th August 1999 - Division Two

Sean Devine - got this seaon's goalscoring tally off to a start at Scunthorpe Wycombe continued their excellent away form with a 1-0 victory at newly promoted Scunthorpe United on Saturday. Wycombe's victory came courtesy of 43rd minute smash and grab goal from Sean Devine after Jermaine McSporran's miss-hit shot from the right had been pushed away. Wycombe players celebrated with an unusual mock head shaving routine led again by Steve 'no bookings' Brown. Wycombe have now won six from their last eight away League games, having previously gone ten months without a win on their travels. The victory gives Wycombe four points, a total that took until the middle of October to reach last season!
Wycombe, without the injured Chris Vinnicombe, started the game full of confidence and could have gone ahead after 9 minutes when a quick break resulted in a corner, from which Keith Ryan's goalbound header was cleared off the line. On 15 minutes the sky's opened and a torrential downpour made the Wycombe fans glad they weren't on the open terrace at Gillingham. Despite the thunder and lightning, Wycombe continued to press but even three corners within as many minutes didn't bring the reward of an opening goal. Sean Devine saw an angled shot deflected wide after 29 minutes while a minute later Paul McCarthy saw his header go the same way after yet another corner. During one of Scunthorpe's rare attacks Lee Hodges should have done better from close but as the heaven's began to clear, Wycombe took the lead. A McSporran shot/cross from the right was snapped at by Devine and Wycombe were 1-0 up. The less said about the celebration the better.
Half-time Scunthorpe 0 Wycombe 1
Wycombe continued to stay in control after the break but after McSporran had ballooned a chance over five minutes into the second period, Scunthorpe began to come back into the game. Lee Holsgrove replaced Paul Emblen in midfield before Andrew Dawson saw a hit and hope shot fly into the home terraces. Devine could have sealed the game on 82 minutes when a searching run ended with a disappointing shot high of the target. Cousins tucked in at the back for the closing minutes as Scunthorpe came closest to equalising when a left wing corner saw  Darryn Stamp head wide at the far post when a goal looked likely. The referee, the infamous Mr David Laws added four minutes of stoppage time on but Wycombe finished as deserved winners and can now go into next weeks home clash with League leaders Preston North End full of confidence.
