Background:
After a few days of speculation and then a sighting in the queue of traffic prior to the pre-season game with Leicester City on 28th July 2021, 31-year-old striker Sam Vokes was confirmed as a new signing just minutes later by the Club. The former Burnley man signed on an initial one-year deal (with an option for a further year) after being released by Championship side Stoke City. He was allocated the No.9 in the Wycombe squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The former Bournemouth youth teamer is best remembered for a seven year spell with Burnley where he netted 62 goals in 258 appearances, including four seasons playing at Premier League level. He moved to Wycombe after two and a half season with Stoke City where he had netted 12 goals in 86 appearances.

Wycombe Manager Gareth Ainsworth commented at the time of the signing: “Sam has been our number one target all summer and we’re so pleased to bring him to Wycombe Wanderers. Sam’s experience speaks for itself, with 64 caps for Wales, scoring in a European Championshp quarter-final, winning promotion to the Premier League three times, and scoring a lot of goals in the top two tiers for Burnley over a seven-year period. He is the perfect fit for us in terms of his character and the way he plays, bringing out exciting creative attacking players into play, scoring plenty of goals himself, and he is the ideal man to lead the line for us in League One this season.”

Vokes netted his first Wycombe goal in the 3-1 victory at Cheltenham on 14th August 2021 and went on to bag a total of 17 goals throughout the season, including what would be decisive second goal in the 2-0 home 1st leg victory over Milton Keynes in the League One Semi-Final play-off. The goal was followed shortly afterwards by the announcement of the player and Club mutually agreeing to trigger an extension of his contract until June 2023.

Commenting on the news, Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth said: “This is a massive statement of Sam’s commitment to Wycombe Wanderers, and of our ambitions to keep this squad as strong as it can possibly be. Bringing Sam to Adams Park last summer was a big coup for us and I’d say that keeping him here is even more significant, after the year he’s had. Sam has made this place his home from day one and he’s enjoying his football again after a frustrating period before he came here. He’s shown exactly why he’s earned so many caps for his country and played in the Premier League, and he’s led by example on and off the pitch."

On 19th April 2023 it was announced Vokes had signed a contract extension to at least June 2024.
