Background:
Wanderers announced on 19th July 2019 the signing of 21-year-old Queens Park Rangers and Northern Ireland international forward, Paul Smyth, on a season long loan.

The Belfast born player joined QPR from Linfield in July 2017 and went on to make his First Team debut for the 'Championship' club on 1st January 2018 - scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 League success over Cardiff City at Loftus Road. He went on to make 13 more appearances for QPR before the end of the 2017/18 campaign, adding a further goal and winning the Supporters Young Player of Season award. In March 2018 he made his senior debut for Northern Ireland in a friendly against South Korea and again celebrated a debut with a late winner in a 2-1 victory at Windsor Park, shortly after coming on as a substitute.

However, despite his promise for QPR and his home country, he Was given limited chances in 2018/19 under new R's boss Steve McClaren and was loaned to 'League One' Accrington Stanley in January 2019 - going on to maker 16 appearances and scoring three times (including one against Wycombe in Stanley's 3-1 victory at Adams Park in March 2019), before the end of the campaign.

His move to Wycombe at the start of the 2019/20 season was his chance to continue his development and get more games under his belt. with Smyth saying: “The manager said that he’s going to try and help me get minutes and help me develop as a player and that’s one of the reasons why I came to the club. I have enjoyed my first day today and hopefully I’ll have many more.” Meanwhile, Wycombe Manager Gareth Ainsworth added: “Paul is a really clever player who I liked from the first game I saw him play for QPR, and I’m delighted that he’s become available for us to bring in to the club here. He’s quick, he can make things happen and he’s got a good eye for goal, so I know he’ll be a really exciting addition to our frontline and our fans will love watching him play. Our excellent relationship with QPR is no secret and I’d like to thank Mark Warburton and everyone else who’s helped to make this happen. We have a proud history of bringing in young talent on loan, nurturing them on and off the pitch, and helping to develop their careers, and I hope Paul is another success story over the next 10 months." He was allocated No. 17 in the Wanderers squad.

Smyth celebrated another club debut with Wanderers' opening goal in the 2-0 home victory against Bolton Wanderers on the first day of the 2019/20 Football League season. However, that proved to be his only goal for Wycombe in an injury hit and Covid affected season. But his consolation was being part of the Wycombe squad that achieved a famous play-off success to gain promotion to the Championship.
