Background: The former Leicester City trainee agreed to sign for Wycombe shortly after the end of the 2004/5 season after being tracked by Wanderers Manager John Gorman. Commenting on the signing via the Wanderers official website, Gorman said "It's a major signing for us. I rate Stefan very highly and I'm delighted that he's agreed to join us. I've known him for years and noticed him when he was at Leicester City so it's great to have the opportunity to finally work with him. He's a goalscoring midfielder and he could add something very special to our team." Oakes will be remembered by Wycombe followers for at least two reasons. The first was his involvement in a handball incident in the FA Cup Quarter-Final in 2001 while playing for Leicester versus Wycombe. The second was a cracking winning goal for Notts County at Adams Park in February 2005. Commenting further on the signing, Gorman added "We feel we need goals from midfield and Stefan can provide that."
Originally signed on a two year deal, the contract was extended to June 2008 part way through the 2005/6 season but come the end of the 2007/8 season, Oakes opted to turn down a new contract offer from Wycombe and move to fellow 'League Two' side Lincoln City.
