After months of speculation, 15 minutes prior to the New Years Day 2024 meeting with Bristol Rovers at Adams Park, the Club revealed that Athletic Newham striker Richard Kone was set to formally sign for Wycombe Wanderers. The 20-year-old, Ivory Coast born player, had been a target for Wanderers for the previous two years, culminating in playing on trial during the close season of 2023/24 and then continuing to train with Wycombe while issues with his work visa were resolved. During a four year spell with Essex League side Athletic Newham, he netted more than 100 goals in all competitions. His signing was formally confirmed on 4th January 2024, when he was allocated No.24 in the Wanderers squad. The length of his contract was described as 'long' by Manager Matt Bloomfield at the time of the signing and is therefore believed to be until at least June 2026. Kone had originally arrived in the UK as a 16-year-old, playing in the Homeless World Cup in Wales before continuing his football with Essex Senior League side Lopes Tavares - later to be renamed Athletic Newham. In four seasons with the Essex side he would net over 100 goals in less than 150 appearances - sparking interest from several professional sides, including Colchester United. He would first play on trial for Wycombe Wanderers in July 2023, culminating in a permanent deal eventually being struck in January 2024. The fee and length of the contract were not disclosed but the fee is expected to nominal but with signficant add-ons for the Essex side. Commenting at the time of the transfer, Bloomfield added: "It's been quite a long transfer saga so we've had to wait and be patient. He's a young boy and we don't want to put too much on his shoulders. He's a lovely lad, he scores goals, he's got a young family that he wants to support and we're really pleased to have him here." Kone went on to score on his competitive debut for Wycombe when he netted against West Ham United U21's side in a Football League Trophy tie at Adams Park on 9 January 2024. He then bagged his first Football League goal in the 2-2 draw with Lincoln City on 27 January 2024. External links: Wikipedia Soccerbase
