Background: A former trainee with his home town club Walsall and progressed to make his Senior debut for The Saddlers in October 1996, aged 18. Clocked up more than 200 First Team appearances at Walsall before a switch to Hull City who were then in the bottom division (Division Three) and managed by Jan Molby. An injury at Hull during the 2003/2004 season kept him out of the side that went on to earn promotion that season and in February 2004 he was signed by Kidderminster Harriers who were now managed by Jan Molby. He went on to play in the Harriers side than avoided relegation back to the Conference at the end of the 2003/2004 campaign but wasn't so lucky the following season as he was a regular in the side who couldn't avoid the drop back to non-League football. In the summer of 2005 he signed for Lincoln City but his spell at Sincil Bank was short and he agreed a contract termination in January 2006 that enabled him to return to Walsall. Relegation with Walsall to League Two followed at the end of the 2005/2006 season but under new Saddlers Manager Richard Money, Keates was appointed captain and he played a key role in Walsall's promotion as champions back to League One at the end of the 2006-07 campaign. Keates scored 13 goals during the season and was named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year, as well as being named Walsall's Player of the Season.
However, after being refused a new deal at Walsall, Keates moved to Peterborough United in the summer of 2007 on a three year deal. He was part of the Posh squad that won successive promotions to end in 'Championship' for the 2009/2010 season but First Team opportunities at the higher level were rare and new Posh Manager Mark Cooper opted to release the player on a free to Wycombe during the Janaury 2010 transfer window.
