What we think: Steve Jones joined Wycombe on loan prior to the start of the 2000/2001 season following a disastrous time at Bristol City. A £400,000 move from Charlton Athletic in September 1999 never worked and he spent the butt end of the 1999/2000 season on loan at Brentford and Southend.
His previous eight years as a pro had seen him involved in transfers totally more than a £1m - with his most successful spell coming in his time with Bournemouth.
Lawrie Sanchez looked to have pulled off a smart move when he grabbed Jones on a three month loan - with Wycombe having the option to buy for a six-figure sum when the deal expired at the end of October 2000. However, that option went pear shaped when Jones broke his foot in a game at Brentford in September 2000 and he never played again that season and eventually returned to City.
Returned to Wycombe on trial at the start of the 2001/2002 season but managed to force himself back in City side where he scored six times before a hamstring injury curtailed his season. Made a surprise move to Ryman League Hornchurch in June 2002 where he joined a two year deal with the chance of moving into a coaching role. Jones began his football career at Billercay and says he has no problem dropping back to the non-League game. Speaking to the media about the move, Jones said "Hornchurch are a very ambitious club and I'm happy to be joining them and hopefully playing a part in their success. They've got big plans, including a brand new 7,000 all-seater stadium and I want to try and get them into the Conference in the next two years."
