What we think: Noel Ashford arrived at Wycombe shortly before the start of the 1986/87 season. he joined along with defender Keith Barrett from Enfield for a combined fee of around £10,000. Wycombe had been relegated from the Gola League the previous May and the signing of this duo from Enfield provided a real lift for supporters. More so when they saw him play. Ashford, an England semi-pro player, simply oozed quality. Not really a goalscorer but from his roaming role he could provide crosses that simply begged to struck into the net. Ashford was dubbed 'God' by Wycombe fans as the 1986/87 season ended with Wycombe as Champions of the Isthmian League. However the high of returning to the Conference was quickly tarnished when the shock news that Ashford had been sold to Barnet for a then record non-League fee. Even worse when Ashford returned with Barnet later that month to demolish Wycombe 7-0 at Loakes Park. Ashford's career meandered after he left Wycombe and he was last heard of playing football in the USA where he's a regular internet user - Hi Noel.
