Elo Revans on the ball against Reading Blues' best performance of the season was enough to rattle league leaders Reading Royals Reserves, but not to finish them off as they came back to win 2-1 in a League encounter played on The Rye on Sunday 14th December.
A battling performance from every player that produced some spells of good football kept the scores level at half time. Although the visitors created more chances, they struggled to break through Blues well-organised defence and stay onside. They had a couple of shots that were either high or wide and put the ball in the net midway through the half only to see the linesman’s flag raised. A series of Caz Yandell free-kicks helped Wycombe keep up the pressure on the league leaders who have only conceded 4 goals this season. Debbie Richards, Jane Graddon and Sophy Bowden packed the midfield and worked hard to stop the ball getting behind them. Leah Asante’s runs down the left led to a couple of corners early on and a long clearance from keeper Lou Plumridge allowed Su Oakley in behind Royals’ back four.
The second half began shakily, but soon picked up and confident work from the back four gave opportunities to play further up the pitch and cause Reading some problems. Oakley was able to spin off her marker and was unlucky not to get her first shot on target. Blues went ahead from an excellent goal; Asante turned inside, laid the ball to Oakley who played it wide again for Bowden to cross first time and Oakley to glance her header past the keeper. The visitors stepped up a gear having gone behind and moved the ball about with more purpose and sooner or later they were going to find a way through. Fifteen minutes to go a cross from the right was tapped in at the far post for the equaliser and as we tired the visitors sniffed a win. Player of the Match Elo Revans couldn’t get any distance on her clearance after blocking a cross from the left and the unmarked left half took her shot first time to send it over Plumridge and under the bar.
