Match report

Carterton v Wycombe
Sunday 7th December 2003

Wycombe Wanderers Ladies took the lead against the run of play in this League game with Carterton but ended up losing out 4-2.
It was 'a game of two halves', in which we delivered the ball too long when we played with the wind and too short into the wind! The back four did what they could to break up attacks but were too often isolated. Keeper Lou Plumridge kept us in the game in the first half to deny the home side any advantage in spite of their dominance. Standing up well she blocked shots from players that broke through and fielded a series of corners confidently.
Leah Asante produced probably our best chance in the first half within minutes of the kick off, but their keeper got down well to smother the ball at her feet. It was a poor performance overall, with few players really able to get hold of the ball. Carterton closed down well and gave us no time to play; they created chances but weren't able to put them away.
The second half was better, but still below not good enough. Debbie Richards battled all game for everything against her old club, and held the midfield together. Her through ball was moved on by Raff Valentino to Su Oakley and the chasing defender ended up knocking the ball into her own net to put us a goal up with 25 minutes remaining. A long ball caught us out and in running back to get hold of it Esther Morley fell over the forward, yards outside the box and in one of the most embarrassing refereeing errors I've seen, a penalty was given. The resulting equaliser set up the home side for a come back. A well taken lob made it 2-1 and a ball that Lyon thought she had poked over the line wide of the post was toed back across the face of goal for a tap in to make it 3-1. A couple of quick passes set up a half chance for Oakley which she squeezed past the keeper from just inside the area to give us hope. Jodie Taylor and Elo Revans did well when they came on combining down the right to set up a great cross, unfortunately too late in the game for anyone to meet it in the box. In the dying moments a long run down their right and across the touch line ended up in the ball being squeezed past Plumridge at the near post to make it 4-2 at the final whistle.
