Oxford United v
Wycombe Wanderers
Wednesday 30th August 2000
A late Danny Senda penalty gave the Wycombe Reserve XI a deserved point in their second Avon Insurance Combination game of the season.
Wycombe fielded a young side, with six of the starting line-up under 20 years old. Giving the side experience were Jason Cousins and Stewart Castledine, while Alan Beeton returned in defence after missing the start of the League season due to minor injuries picked up as a passenger in a road accident.
Once again Wycombe dominated proceedings without really testing home 'keeper Hubert Busby. Senda threatened the home defence as early as the 2nd minute when he sprinted down the Manor slope before putting in a loud claim for a penalty when he lost his footing.
Matt Brady also had a good chance from Senda's cross in the 21st minute but he place his shot wide of the target.
It was United who took the lead against the run of play in the 35th minute. Cousins fouled Peter Fear around 25 yards goal and Fear picked himself up to curl an unstoppable free-kick into the top corner to Mark Westhead's left.
Derek Lilley could have increased the lead for the home side but he sliced wide from only six yards
The Wanderers drew level on the stroke of half-time. Ben Townsend sent in a deep cross from the right wing and Leeyon Phelan rose well to head home despite being under pressure from 'keeper and defender.
United just about edged the second-half. Lilley should have scored when he took the ball around Mark Osborn in the 69th minute but he shot into the side netting as the angle narrowed. Five minutes later, however, it was 2-1 when United sub Jamie Brooks crossed for Jamie Cook to slot into an empty net.
Wycombe's last gasp equaliser came with six minutes left on the clock. Senda found space on the right and when his cross was cut out by the arm of Kelvin McIntosh the linesman was quick to signal for a penalty. Senda put the ball to the 'keepers right and was grateful when the ball just crept under his body to earn the point.
