Football League 'League Two'
Wycombe players celebrate after Jermaine Easter opens scoring at PeterboroughWanderers won 2-0 at Peterborough United on the final day of the regular league season but the result proved to be academic as Cheltenham Town also won, meaning Wycombe will play The Robins in the two-legged play-off semi-final and have to travel to Whaddon Road for the second-leg. The match at Peterborough saw Jermaine Easter put Wycombe into the lead on 14 minutes when he curled in a shot from around 12 yards. Steve Williams kept the home side at bay with a number of good saves before substitute Mike Williamson sealed the victory with a headed goal five minutes from time.
Team news for Wycombe at London Road saw stand-in boss Steve Brown make three changes to the side that lost at home to Darlington the preview week. Frank Talia was rested in goal and Steve Williams made his first start in the Football League since April 2004. Joe Burnell returned in midfield in favour of Rob Lee, while up front Tommy Mooney was rested for the first time this season, with Jermaine Easter taking his place. Third year Youth Teamer Steve Gregory was named as a substitute and was introduced late on for his Football League debut.
Danny Senda tackles former Wycombe player David FarrellWith the home side needing to win to have any chance of making the play-offs it was no surprise that Barry Fry's side started the brighter side. Richard Logan saw a shot saved by Williams on 5 minutes and the same player fired wide before Easter opened the scoring with one of the goals of the season, picking up an Ian Stonebridge pass inside the box before turning and curling home the ball into the top corner past Tyler in the Posh goal.
Former Wanderer David Farrell had the best chance to level the scores when he was through on goal in the 30th minute but again Williams stood up to the shot and saved with relative ease. Meanwhile, the closest Wycombe came to extending the lead before the break was when Matt Bloomfield volleyed wide in the 44th minute.
Steve Gregory is introduced for his Football League debutWith Will Antwi living close to the edge with a yellow card picked up in the 40th minute for a foul and then being given a stern warning by referee Dermot Gallagher for another foul moments later, Steve Brown made the sensible decision of avoiding the risk of any suspension by replacing the former Aldershot defender with Mike Williamson.
Bloomfield missed a good chance from close range at the start of the second period while Farrell saw another shot pushed away by Williams. There was an injury scare on the hour mark for Wycombe when Easter was forced off after twisting his ankle close to the right bye-line. Easter was replaced by Charlie Griffin who should have done better when presented with a clear opening from the right of the box three minutes later but he shot wide. Save of the match came in the 73rd minute when Williams blocked with his feet from Logan after the Posh player looked certain to score when a loose ball fell to him in the six yard box. The final say of the match was left for Wycombe when Russell Martin's corner from the right was headed home by Williamson and gave another reason for a near 900 following from Wycombe to celebrate and give hope for the play-offs.
Final Score - Peterborough United 0 Wycombe 2
Steve Brown Speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio after the match Steve Brown said ""I said I wanted to get something today and the players applied themselves and played with conviction on a very poor surface. We still tried to pass the ball and play like we did all season and in the end we've had to dig in and grind a result out today." Brown singled out Steve Williams for praise, saying that he was his Man of the Match and will give him something to consider when selecting the side to play in the play-offs. And looking forward to the games with Cheltenham, Brown said the result against Posh had helped, "It's given the boys even more confidence and they are looking forward to next week."
