Notts County 0
Saturday 14th January 2006
Football League 'League Two'
It was the tragic news that broke after the game of Mark Philo's death that overshadowed all details of this match. Perhaps at the end of the season when the importance of the result can be assessed, it will be possible to look back and give it some relevance.
For the record, the meeting with County saw John Gorman give debuts to newly signing loanees Matt Duke - goalkeeper on loan from Hull City - and Aidan Collins - central defender on loan from Ipswich Town and standing in for the suspended Roger Johnson.
A scrappy first half was noted for another serious injury to Charlie Griffin. The Wanderers striker went down awkwardly on his ankle and needed three minutes of treatment before being stretchered off. Tests after the game revealed ligament damage that will keep the former Forest Green Rovers player out for at least one month.
Aidan Collins - opener against Notts CountyOn an increasingly wet and muddy pitch Wanderers eventually broke the deadlock on 57 minutes when Tommy Mooney's shot from the right corner of the penalty area struck the foot of the left hand upright and Collins was on hand to react first and calmy side foot home the rebound for his first ever senior goal.
Kevin Betsy had a great chance to make it 2-0 on 64 minutes when he was set free down the right but the ball ran away from him as he approached goal and County 'keeper Kevin Pilkington claimed.
Collins went close when he fired over from 12 yards on 70 minutes but a beautifully crafted goal on 72 sealed the game for the Wanderers. Matt Bloomfield and Joe Burnell were the main providers, with the latter threading the ball through to Sergio Torres on the right before the Argentinian angled his shot past Pilkington for his first goal for Wycombe.
Final Score - Wycombe 2 Notts County 0
Mark Philo Any celebrations of Wanderers retaining top spot in the table were knocked totally flat as the news came through that Mark Philo had died during the game as a result of car accident that happened in the early hours of the morning of the game. The 21 year old was still recovery from injury and was not in the squad for the meeting with County. Read more
