Lincoln City 3
Monday 17th April 2006
Football League 'League Two'
Joe Burnell in action against LincolnWanderers catastrophic end to the season continued on Easter Monday with a 3-0 home defeat to Lincoln City. Results elsewhere move John Gorman's side to sixth place in the table with a play-off place the best to hope for with three games remaining. In a gutless performance Wycombe were 2-0 down from goals by Jamie Forrester (61 minutes) and Francis Green (73) before they even registered a serious shot on target. Forrester made it 3-0 on 81 minutes to complete the nightmare.
John Gorman made four changes to the side that had lost at Chester two days previous - Mike Williamson returned in central defence in place of Will Antwi, Clint Easton returned at left back with Russell Martin moving into midfield where Stefan Oakes came back into the starting line-up with Rob Lee and Matt Bloomfield dropping to the bench. Upfront Charlie Griffin got the nod over Tommy Mooney who was dropped to bench for the first time in a League match for Wycombe.
The changes made little difference to Wycombe's fortune and in a drab opening 45 minutes it was Lincoln who created the only clear cut opening when Green forced Frank Talia to save with his legs after cutting in from the left wing. A Danny Senda free-kick from the left of midfield on 58 minutes brought some minor hope for the Wycombe faithful but after City 'keeper Alan Marriott picked the shot out with ease, disaster again for Wycombe as they conceded twice in eleven minutes.
Jermaine Easter in action against LincolnThe first came following a corner from the left that was partially cleared but returned in at the near post where Jamie Forrester side footed home via a deflection from Clint Easton. The now obligatory Wycombe substitutions followed but it was the visitors who doubled their lead on 73 minutes when the ball was squared from the left of midfield for Francis Green to convert with a low shot from just inside the penalty. Russell Martin sent a long range curling effort into the arms of Marriott on 80 minutes but it was Forrester who exploited the fragile Wycombe defence again when he latched onto a breakaway before flicking the ball over the advancing Talia.
Final Score - Wycombe 0 Lincoln City 3
Steve Brown Steve Brown fielded the press conference after the game and commented to the official website, "I thought we started well and played with confidence in the first half and at the start of the second we did OK. But once Lincoln went in front you could see the confidence go completely out of side. Realistically I don't think we troubled their keeper today. You have to compete. When we had that run before Christmas the one thing we did was compete for 90 minutes and maybe we're not doing that at the minute."
