Saturday 15th April 2006
Football League 'League Two'
Script goes wrong again for Wycombe - this time at ChesterWanderers' dramatic slump in form continued with a 1-0 defeat at Chester City. The only goal of the game came in the 64th minute when Stuart Drummond got a touch on David Artell's header to deflect the ball past Frank Talia. It's now five defeats in a row for John Gorman's side and an eight point gap has now opened up between Wycombe and the automatic promotion spots. Wanderers now need six points from their remaining four games to be certain of a play-off place.
As expected the game saw John Gorman make changes to the side that had lost at Macclesfield the previous week - Russell Martin came in at left-back in favour of Clint Easton, Rob Lee returned in midfield ahead of Stefan Oakes and Jermaine Easter was favoured up front instead of Charlie Griffin. Elsewhere, Sergio Torres was still ruled out but has resumed light training ready for a possible return after the Easter games.
Jermaine Easter in action at ChesterIt was another game where Wanderers struggled to test the opposing goalkeeper - this was summed up two minutes into the second-half when Kevin Betsy managed to scoop Easter's low cross from the left bye-line over the cross bar. Before then there had been limited chances for both sides. On four minutes Betsy threaded a ball through to Easter on the right channel but the cross was just behind the run of Mooney. Good trickery from Senda on the right on 19 minutes saw another delivery to the far stick but there was no Wycombe player on hand. At the other Talia was rarely troubled with loanee Derek Asamoah being the major threat but he squewed wide on the couple of occasions he was given room by the Wanderers defence.
Will Antwi battles for header against ChesterMooney went close with a long range effort just after the restart but after Betsy's miss it was the home side who began to dominate as they strived for their fifth consecutive victory and climb from the relegation zone. Just before the hour mark Jake Edwards was allowed space for a free header following a corner from the right but the effort went over the crossbar. A couple of minutes later Talia made a double save at his near post, blocking from Tom Curtis and Ben Davies. But Chester made their pressure tell on 64 minutes when a free-kick from the right was swung over to the far side of the Wycombe penalty area where Artell's header was deflected past Talia by Drummond.
Earlier in the season Wycombe may have come back from this position but with confidence at a low an equaliser never seemed likely. The obligatory substitutions followed and an Oakes free-kick on 77 minutes that flashed past the right hand post brought a little hope. It was Tommy Mooney who went closest to equalising for Wycombe with ten minutes remaining when his drive from the edge of the box was saved to the keeper's left but that was as good as it got on another depressing day for Wycombe followers.
Final Score - Chester City 1 Wycombe 0
John Gorman Speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio after the game John Gorman said he was deeply disappointed with the result again and added, "We've had enough problems off the field and it's now just become a joke on the field because everything that was going good is now slipping away from us. We've got to try and keep believing. That's what I've tried to keep instilling, that's what makes me mad. I can't do anymore than I'm doing. I pick the team, try and make substitutions. We do what we can, the coaches will inpsire the boys, say the right things before the game." Trying to put a reason behind the recent poor form, Gorman said it was down the the confidence of the players, "It's just confidence because if the ball goes in the net it gives you confidence. We've lost the first goal recently. I haven't got all the answers otherwise we would have won."
