Football League 'League Two'
Kevin Betsy early effort versus Cheltenham Wanderers and Cheltenham Town remain unbeaten in 2005/6 after playing out a 0-0 draw at Adams Park on Holiday Monday. An entertaining game saw both sides create numerous chances with the visitors having by far the better of the opening half - Jamie Victory's header against the cross bar on 35 minutes the closest to the deadlock being broken. Wycombe responded in the second-half with new signing Sergio Torres almost scoring following his first touch on 59 minutes with a right footed effort that Town 'keeper Shane Higgs dived to his right to save. Wanderers are now third in table after six games.
John Gorman stuck with the same starting XI for the third consecutive game but it was only after the introduction of Torres and the returning Joe Burnell that Wanderers came to life. Before then it was the visitors who played most of the football and created the better chances. After Betsy and Mooney had fired wide for Wycombe it was on 27 minutes that Frank Talia was forced to block a John Melligan effort and Mike Williamson the follow up. Victory's header eight minutes later came after sloppy Wycombe marking at a Cheltenham corner on the left and Wycombe were grateful to go in at the break all square.
Melligan headed wide for the visitors on 57 minutes before Gorman made his changes. Torres' impact was immediate as he picked up possesion just left of centre and weaved towards goal before unleashing a shot that Higgs did well to push away from the top corner. Danny Senda sent an effort into the side netting three minutes later after more good work from Torres, while Stefan Oakes' shot from the right channel saw Higgs save again as the ball looked to heading for the top corner of the net. That ended Wanderers' brief spell of pressure on the Cheltenham goal as Town Manager John Ward made changes of his own to counteract and Michael Rose came close to snatching victory for Cheltenham with a minute remaining but Talia tipped the ball over. At the other end Wycombe substitute Ikechi Anya saw a shot blocked by a packed Cheltenham defence to confirm the two sides would share the points for the fifth consecutive time since they have become Football League rivals.
Final Score - Wycombe 0 Cheltenham Town 0
Sergio Torres Wycombe Manager John Gorman was full praise for Sergio Torres when speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio after the game. He said "It was lovely to hear the fans singing his name. He was outstanding. He never gave the ball away. It was beautiful to watch. It was exactly what I wanted and we are happy to give him the chance." But the Wycombe boss added that the player was yet to gain full fitness, saying "He's hardly trained with us. He's a part-timer. Once he gets really fit we will see the best of him.". Commenting on the game, Gorman commented ""Cheltenham deserve a lot of credit, they came to stop us and nulify us and then hit us. They had a spell where they were the better just before half-time. But we came back in the second-half."
