Wycombe Wanderers 1
Saturday 18th February 2006
Football League 'League Two'
Kevin Betsy - equaliser at Boston An injury hit Wanderers side had to settle for yet another draw in 'League Two' after Kevin Betsy's strike on 70 minutes earned a point in a 1-1 scoreline at York Street. And in a familiar scenario this season, Wycombe had to come from behind after Julian Joachim gave the home side the lead on 56 minutes. Tommy Mooney, who had hit the crossbar for Wycombe in the first half, went closest to winning it for Wycombe on 83 minutes when he just failed to convert a Betsy cross. However, Wycombe had Frank Talia to thank for a brilliant last minute save from Lawrie Dudfield after the Boston striker had been presented with a one on one opportunity. With Carlisle thrashing Rushden 5-0, Wycombe drop back to second place in the table on goal difference that is seven inferior to the Cumbrian side. And just four points seperate the top five as the end of season clamber for promotion places gathers momentum.
Team news for Wycombe had seen the surprise inclusion of Keith Ryan on the bench. Elsewhere, recent signing Jermaine Easter was also on the bench after recovering from his rib injury. However, Joe Burnell remained out with his calf injury as did Matt Bloomfield with a knee problem. There were added injury woes too after Stefan Oakes picked up a groin strain in training on Thursday. Clint Easton was ruled out through suspension and Russell Martin came in to deputise at left-back. Ian Stonebridge earned a start alongside Tommy Mooney after scoring the winner at Meadow Lane. It was his first start for Wcyombe in the current season since 2nd September. Long term injury victim Will Antwi also travelled with the squad for the first time but did not feature in the sixteen. Meanwhile, Boston included former Wanderer and Portsmouth loanee Gary Silk in their side. Silk joined on loan from Pompey in January to break a spell of eleven months without playing First Team football.
Wycombe will look back on the game as another where three points were there for the taking. John Gorman, who spent the first half in the stands before returning to the bench for the second period, saw a number of decent chances go begging for his side. Those chances included Stonebridge seeing a shot pushed wide by Brighton loanee 'keeper Michael Kuipers on 15 minutes and a Mooney shot hitting the crossbar on 26 minutes after the former Oxford man and played a slick one-two with Betsy. Moments later a fairly weak shot from Torres managed to slip underneath Kuipers but the post came to the rescue as the ball rebounded back into the 'keepers hands.
The home side's threat came in the main through Joachim but poor finishing and good shot stopping from Talia helped out Wycombe. First on 24 minutes Joachim shot wide when presented with a golden chance from six yards, while later in the half Talia dived to his right to save from the striker.
Former Leicester City and Aston Villa striker Joachim finally got his goal on 56 minutes. It came came after Sergio Torres' miss hit a clearance in midfield and the returning high ball to the left side of the Wycombe box saw Dudfield get the better of Roger Johnson before his low cross found an unmarked Joachim who slotted past Talia from six yards. It left Wycombe attempting to fight back from a goal down for the 14th time this season and has proven on a regular basis, they were successful. The reward this time came after former Boston United striker Jermaine Easter had been introduced for Rob Lee and Wycombe had reverted to an even more attacking style. Betsy was shut out on a run to goal on 65 minutes but six minutes later he was on the end of a move that started when Dean Bowditch pushed the ball out right to an overlappin gDanny Senda whose cross needed neat footwork from Betsy to get around three defenders before shooting into the top left corner of the net in front of the Wycombe fans.
Senda clipped a free-kick just over on 79 minutes and Mooney was close to scoring on 83 minutes before some last minute scares for Wycombe. First a free-kick into the box was eventually claimed by Talia and then with stoppage time approaching Talia pulled out the save of the day to deny Dudfield
Final Score - Boston United 1 Wycombe 1
John Gorman It was a frustrating day for Wycombe Manager John Gorman who said he had come down from the stands for the second-half because he was sick of seeing how well his side had been playing without winning. He commented to BBC Three Counties Radio "We absolutely destroyed them for football. There was only one team that played football but they weren't dirty and they weren't aggressive, they just played a different type of game to us." Gorman added, "We've played magnificently on a stoggy pitch. We should have won comfortably. The first half was so one sided it was almost shocking and then they almost sneaked a goal from Joachim and at the end Frank has had to make a maginificent save but there is nobody today who could even dream that they deserved to that game because we were just so much superior." And the Wycombe boss wasn't too concerned with Carlisle sneaking ahead in the table on goal difference, saying that his side score plenty of goals too and that one win would take their advantage away.
