West Ham United 1
Tuesday 29th July 2003
Friendly
Wycombe ran out comfortable 3-1 winners in this friendly game with West Ham United at Adams Park. Wanderers fielded a similar starting XI to the one that overcame Aylesbury United the previous Saturday with Steve Williams retaining his place in goal. It was planned that 'keeper Frank Talia would play in this game but he wasn't risked, with the main aim to ensure he is fit to face Stockport County in the Football League opener on Saturday 9th August. The one change from the game at Aylesbury was that former Hammer Gavin Holligan was favoured in place of Youth Teamer Billy Harding.
It was mixed evening for Holligan who scored Wycombe's opener after 20 minutes when he captilised on David James howler after Darren Currie had crossed from the left. Roger Johnson headed in Wanderers second goal four minutes later following a long throw from the left by Richard Harris. However, there was bad news for Holligan on 27 minutes when he was forced off with what looked like a groin strain.
Watford loanee Simon Patterson replaced Holligan but it was the visitors who pulled a goal back five minutes before the break when Fredi Kanoute finished from around six yards after Williams had done well to block an effort from Jermain Defoe.
A very casual looking West Ham side had their best spell after the break but the closest they came to equalising was in the 74th minute when the crossbar came to Wycombe's rescue to keep out Joe Cole's shot. Lewis Cook sealed the victory for the Wanderers in the 84th minute when he drove the ball into the roof of the net after a pass into the heart of the West Ham penalty area.
