Wycombe Wanderers 2
Saturday 16th August 2003
Football League Division Two
Darren Currie For 44 minutes at Bloomfield Road Wanderers ran the show, had stormed into a 2-0 lead and were dreaming of topping the Division Two table by the end of the afternoon. However a mad spell in the dying moments of the first half saw Wanderers concede twice and the misery was complete on the hour mark when Kirk Hilton slotted home the winner. Incredibly it was Blackpool's first League victory since they beat Wycombe at Bloomfield Road last March. As expected Lawrie Sanchez didn't make any changes to the line-up that beat Stockport and Wimbledon. Keeper Frank Talia was fit again but ex-Youth Teamer Steve Williams retained his place after keeping two clean sheets in his debut First Team appearances. Wanderers started well and opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Simon Patterson headed home from around 18 yards after a ball in from the right by Darren Currie. It was Currie who scored the goal of the game on 31 minutes when he rifled home from around 30 yards and at this point it would have been a brave man to have betted against Wycombe being victors. Richard Harris was forced off with a injury on 32 minutes to be replaced by Billy Harding but the game went pear-shaped for Wycombe as the half-time break approached. With seconds left of the first 45 minutes a corner from the left by Neil Danns was flicked on by Mike Flynn and Scott Taylor converted from around 6 yards. Then before Wycombe had time to draw breath they had loss possession from the kick-off and when Richard Wellens sent a ball down the right channel it was Taylor who ran on the strike the ball past Williams from the edge of the penalty area. Neill Danns was sent off for the home side in stoppage for a second bookable offence but it won't have spoilt the day for Steve McMahons's side who have now beaten Wycombe in five out of the last six meetings.
The result was a massive disappointment for Wanderers after dominating the game from the opening stages. Within the first minute a through ball by Jermaine McSporran found Richard Harris and only a blatant body check by Blackpool 'keeper Lee Jones stopped the Wycombe player in his tracks. Chris Vinnicombe had the resulting free-kick tipped over but the foul on Harris was eventually to force the ex-Palace man off through injury.
Mark Rogers maybe should have done better with a header on 19 minutes as Wycombe continued to apply pressure to the home side and it eventually paid off in the 24th minute when Simon Patterson scored his first goal for the Wanderers. A Currie special only confirmed Wycombe's superiority before the madness started just before the break.
Wanderers completely lost their way in the second half and after Hilton had completed Blackpool's comeback only a goaline clearance by the Wycombe defence on 64 minutes prevented a bigger capitulation.
Roger Johnson played up front for the final ten minutes as Wycombe went all out for an equaliser but it never looked like happening and although Neill Danns was sent off for the home side in stoppage for a second bookable offence it won't have spoilt the day for Steve McMahons's side who have now beaten Wycombe in five out of the last six meetings.
