Football League Division Two
Jonny Dixon versus Colchester
Jonny Dixon gets stuck in against Colchester
Wanderers drab season was summed up with a tired and lifeless display against Colchester at Adams Park in the final home game of the 2002/3 campaign. The point gained from the goalless draw ensures Wycombe's safety in Division Two for another season but it could have been far worse if Kem Izzet's 73rd minute header had gone in rather than cannon down off the Wycombe crossbar before being cleared.
As expected Lawrie Sanchez went with the front pairing of Jonny Dixon and Richard Harris, while Darren Currie returned to midfield in place of the suspended Steve Brown. Before the game Sanchez had said "This one is for the fans. We know how much this game means to the supporters and we want to do it for them." But any thoughts of Wanderers attacking from the off were quickly forgotten as Wycombe took 30 minutes to get in a serious effort on goal - Harris controlling well on the edge of the box before shooting weakly at U's 'keeper Richard McKinney.
The visitors continued to threaten leading up to the half-time interval. On 33 minutes Dean Morgan got the better of Danny Senda in a central position before seeing his shot on the turn from the edge of the Wycombe penalty area pushed around the right hand upright by Talia. Talia also had to dash out quickly to collect on the edge of his six yard box a minute before the break.
Half-time 0-0
Roger Johnson and Andy Thomson battle for the ball against ColchesterThe second-half was another scrappy affair and followed a similar pattern to the first. Darren Currie was replaced by Stuart Roberts after 56 minutes after the ex-Barnet man twisted his ankle. Lewis Cook came on for Keith Ryan a few minutes later but despite the added pace Wanderers failed to deliver.
Wanderers did contrive a token effort at goal in the 68th minute when Dixon shot on the run from 20 yards following good work from Harris but McKinney saved with ease to his right. The crossbar and another Talia block prevented the visitors from taking the lead five minutes later and it was always the U's who looked most likely to score.
Central defender Ian Simpemba was introduced for the final ten minutes for his Football League debut as Wanderers finished the game with five former Youth Team players on the pitch.
Wycombe finish the season with a game at Plymouth on Saturday 3rd May with little to play for except trying to avoid a worst ever finishing place in Division Two since promotion in 1994.
