Wycombe Wanderers 1
Tuesday 10th April 2001
Nationwide Football League Division Two
Michael Simpson - picture Paul DennisWycombe's abysmal League form continued at The Vetch Field as they conceded three goals in the final 15 minutes to go down to a Swansea side without a home League win this year.
After the excesses of Sunday's game with Liverpool it would have been excusable to see a jaded performance but after going ahead after just two minutes, The Wanderers went on to dominate the first-half and should have been further ahead before the break. Michael Simpson had opened the scoring after he followed up Guy Whittingham's shot that Roger Freestone could not hold on to.
On a difficult playing surface Whittingham, Rammell (twice) and Vinnicombe all had clear openings to get a vital second goal, while Martin Taylor was hardly tested.
Half-time Swansea 0 Wycombe 1
Wycombe simply ran out of ideas in the second-half and were easy victims on far too many occasions to Swansea's offside trap. Prime culprit was Whittingham who was substituted on 69 minutes for Danny Senda. Senda's pace gave Wycombe more options up front but the equalising goal on 75 minutes would have had Lawrie Sanchez fuming. Wycombe had pushed up Paul McCarthy and Jason Cousins for a corner but when the corner came to nothing Swansea broke away, switching the ball across to the right where Walter Boyd side stepped Vinnicombe before placing the ball past Taylor.
Keith Ryan's introduction on 80 minutes for Rammell gave Wycombe new legs in attack and it nearly paid off in the 83rd minute when 'Rhino's cross from the left set-off a massive goalmouth scramble that saw Senda, Brown and Ryan all have swings at the ball but to no avail.
After dominating for the majority of the game a draw would have been a disappointing result but things went from bad to worse in the 87th minute when Jason Price's hopeful strike at goal from around 20 yards saw Taylor wrong-footed following a deflection off Jamie Bates.
Wycombe's miserable night was completed in the final minute when Boyd scored with a 25 yard shot that screamed into the top right-hand corner of Taylor' s goal.
