Martin Taylor - picture Paul DennisWycombe's painful end to the season hic-cupped again at Dean Court as they went down 2-0 to play-off chasing Bournemouth. Both goals came in the second-half but the opener on 65 minutes had Wycombe fuming. On-loan Leeds United striker Warren Feeney looked to be well offside before he volleyed past Martin Taylor and when Wade Elliott added a second six minutes later it was game over.
The game marked the start of Lawrie Sanchez's three game ban from the dug-out but he took a position in the stand that was as close as you could get to the touchline without actually being on the pitch.
He saw his side start the brighter against a Bournemouth side missing top scorer Jermain Defoe due to an England Under 18 call-up. The Wanderers had forced a corner and seen a Chris Marsh shot cannon off the back of Keith Ryan before Steve Brown's claim for a penalty in the 6th minute were waved away. 'Brownie' appeared to be shoved over by Carl Fletcher after Ryan had dinked the ball into the Cherries penalty area but the officials weren't interested.
However, there was a penalty in the 35th minute at the other end when Jason Cousins tripped Claus Jorgensen but Martin Taylor performed heroics again by diving to his left to save Richard Hughes' spot-kick.
From that point on Wycombe's best hope was probably to hold out for a 0-0 draw. A tiring Keith Ryan was replaced by Roy Essandoh and Guy Whittingham was exchanged for Danny Senda. But any thoughts of the changes injecting life into the Wycombe attack went pear-shaped when Feeney volleyed past Taylor. Moments earlier Taylor had brilliantly tipped Fenney's drive from the left flank wide but from the resulting corner Wycombe only half-cleared and it was Feeney who latched on to the return as Wycombe pushed out.
Six minutes later an unfortunate slip by Cousins let in Elliott to grab the second and it could have been more but for another outstanding save from Taylor to deny substitute Chukki Eribenne. Eribenne had only been on the pitch four minutes but he can count himself lucky not to have seen red within seconds of coming on following a scything challenge on Chris Vinnicombe.
There was a late rally by Wycombe but it was too little, too late and the sooner this game is forgotten the better.
