Yeovil Town 1
Wycombe Wanderers 0
Saturday 8th October 2016
Football League Two

Wanderers fell to a 1-0 defeat at Yeovil Town to continue their poor form on the road during the 2016/17 League season.

A first half goal from Ryan Hedges was enough for The Glovers to seal victory over a Wycombe side that reverted back to the starting XI that had beaten Exeter City at Adams Park seven days previous. But against a side three places below in the table, Wanderers had Jamal Blackman to thank for diving low to his left on 20 minutes to keep out a low effort from Nathan Smith. A few minutes later, in a rare Wycombe attack, Sam Wood's shot from distance bounced just past the right-hand upright.

Yeovil went close again on 32 minutes when Alex Lacey saw a downward header bounce over the crossbar following a right-wing corner to the far post. While Garry Thompson dragged a shot wide of the right-hand post for Wycombe a minute later.

The winning goal came on 36 minutes when a low drive from Alex Lawless struck the foot of the left post before rebounding across the face of the goal where Hedges was first to react and net the loose ball from six yards.

Akinfenwa's introduction gave the travelling fans some hope but the nearest to an equaliser came on 87 minutes when Nick Freeman drove a loose ball into the side netting on the left hand side of the home goal.

Manager Gareth Ainsworth revealed after the game that second-half subsitute Adebayo Akinfenwa had been suffering with an illness, while Garry Thompson took a smash in the ribs and Joe Jacobson cramped up during the game. Meanwhile, Scott Kashket was unavilable due to 'illness' and was replaced on the bench by Steven McGinn. The result left Wanderers 16th in the table, with Yeovil climbing to 18th, now just a point behind.

Speaking after the game, Wanderers Manager Gareth Ainsworth told the press: "Bayo has been ill for two days & didn't even take part in the warm-up. Thommo was smashed in the ribs, JJ cramped up. We were unrecognisable at times. We got sucked into a game we didn't want to play and a couple had an off-day. Let's move on."
