TONY ADAMS AT FANS FORUM
(Friday 5th March 2004)
Tony Adams The first Fans Forum since the appointment of Tony Adams took place in The Vere Suite on Thursday 26th February 2004. There were brief presentations from Community Officer Dave Evans and Youth Development Officer Colin Barnes before Club Chairman Ivor Beeks introduced the Wycombe Manger by saying "If a Club can be measured by the effort put in by the staff then at this moment in time we would be top of the League. Because I've been around this Club for many, many years and this guy and his staff are now working the hardest and the longest hours that I've seen a Manager work since I've been here."

These are some of the key responses from the Wycombe boss to the points raised during the evening.

Signing new players
"I'm out there looking. What I can assure you is that the players that I bring are going to be 'Tony Adams' players. They are going to be players who have got the right attitude, the right commitment and better than what we've got."

Playing formation
"I want a structure and to build a structure that goes through this Football Club. I was talking about the Southampton way of things today with the Chairman and the way that Gordon Strachan went about building a system of play that he thought could win games. I've been brought up 4-4-2, I love it. I don't think it works for this Football Club at this present moment."

Resources
"It's a good budget. It's OK and certainly a challenge. I see other clubs around the country doing it. I'm a big fan of (Phil) Parkinson at Colchester. And I watched them losing against Southend and I was cheering Southend."

Player assessment
"I go through a vigorous assessment of every player that I've got and with my staff, I respect their decisions as well. I know they are not going to be as good as Premiership players but they can still run around and have the right attitude. I think that is the first port of call for me, it is the attitude, at what ever level. I don't judge them by technical ability. Don't get worried that I've come in here and I can't judge a player because I'm comparing them to Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira, I don't do that."

Leadership
"There is a lack of leadership here on the pitch and that is one of the things that I have pin pointed for the players that I am going to bring in. It's an area of concern and an area that I'm working hard for recruitment in that area to make sure we have got some leaders."

Team selection
"Sometimes you are going to have to let me work with players and see how they respond to not being in the team and to see if they do want to fight for their place or we have got to shake hands. I love competition for places. I love people under pressure and under stress. They have got to be able to perform under that. They can't get complacent. They need that level of intensity and competition for places. They can't just go through the motions here, not while I'm Manager."

Replacing Terry Gibson as Assistant Manager
"Pete Cawley is doing a fantastic job and I'm getting a good staff together to cover all aspects of coaching. The main reason I joined Arsenal wasn't because they were a fantastic football club and their tradition and paid loads of money. I joined that club because of Terry Burton because he was the best coach when I was 16 years of age. It doesn't matter what club you are, you have got to have the right coaches and Pete Cawley is the right coach."

Returning to playing
"I wish I could! When those last minute goals were going in against us, every morning I got up, I was thinking I'm going to have to stick them back on. I did actually get the boots back on and lasted about five minutes and thought 'Oh shit!' they are on their own."

Narrowing the pitch like the previous Manager
"That's not in the equation for me. They are all in a criteria aren't they? Pitches are pitches. What am I talking about pitches for?"

What attracted you to Wycombe?
"I thought I had met an honest Chairman. I had several meetings with different Chairman and Clubs around this area and this was the best option for me because I am a people man and not a money man or whatever. I like people and honest people and I thought I met a man that I could trust."
