Wycombe Wanderers 1
Saturday 20th April 2002
Football League Division Two
Fireworks as the teams enter the pitch at Swindon, not many during the game, etc.. Wycombe brought the curtain down on the 2001/2 season with a fairly lack-lustre 1-1 draw at The County Ground, Swindon. Sean Devine gave Wycombe the lead on the stroke of half-time when he tucked in a Dannie Bulman knockdown but Matthew Heywood levelled the scores ten minutes into the second-half when he headed home a corner from the right. As expected Lawrie Sanchez didn't use this game to experiment with his line-up and there were just two changes to the previous week's game with Oldham. Former Crystal Palace striker Richard Harris was fit again and replaced Gavin Holligan, while Dannie Bulman was in the starting line-up as a replacement for the injured Steve Brown. Sanchez was obviously keen to see Harris in action again before deciding on whether to offer him a contract but the long throw specialist had unspectacular game and was eventually replaced in the 86th minute after picking up an injury.
Darren Currie at SwindonAfter the teams had entered the pitch to a brief display of fireworks, the opening stages of the game proved uneventful and it wasn't until ten minutes before the break that there was any serious goalmouth action. First on 36 minutes Darren Currie should have got his shot on target from the left side of goal after a long throw from the right wing by Harris. Then at the other end on 41 minutes Martin Taylor pulled out a great save to stop Eric Sabin's effort from the right side of the penalty area. A minute later Andy Rammell side footed high of the target from around eight yards from Bulman's low cross from the right.
Currie and Rammell will have been disappointed to have missed those chances but Sean Devine showed how it was done when he stole in at the far post after Chris Vinnicombe's flighted cross from the left had been knocked back across the face of the goal by Bulman.
Half-time Swindon 0 Wycombe 1
Andy Rammell at SwindonSwindon came out all guns blazing in the second-half and drew level in the 55th minute when Paul McAreavey swung in a corner from the right and Heywood was left unmarked to head home. It was a sloppy goal to concede and it spurred the home side on to go for victory.
Andy Gurney whistled a low effort just wide of Taylor's right-hand post on 65 minutes and following a streaker and two other pitch invasions from Swindon fans, Paul Edwards blasted a chance over from 20 yards.
The closest Wycombe came to scoring was a speculative 40 yard curling effort from the right side of midfield by Andy Thomson. The ex-Bristol Rovers seeing his shot hit the top of the crossbar as Bart Griemink back peddled. Devine should have done better on the break in the 78th minute but he let the ball run away from him but it was the home side who finished the game with a flourish. Paul Edwards saw a half volley parried by Taylor in the 84th minute while Nathan Edwards had a glorious chance to win the game in the third minute of stoppage time but he sent his shot high of the target.
The point against Swindon took Wycombe's tally for the season to 64 and a final finishing place of 11th place.
