PRICE RISE SPIN CAUSES DEBATE
(Friday 3rd May 2002)
Simon Monkman Wanderers' fans have been hit with price rises virtually across the board despite Chief Executive Simon Monkman's claims via the Bucks Free Press to the contrary. He was quoted as saying in the 26th April edition "We have worked very hard to keep the increase as low as we feasibly could and the increase is less than the average. We've pegged our prices for the last three years and it is regrettable that we have to put them up."
While many realise that price rises are inevitable in the current climate, it's Monkman's 'off the cuff' remarks that has hit a nerve with Adams Park regulars.
The Oxford Dictionary definition of 'pegged' states "keep (wages or prices) at a fixed level" and a simple glance back at previous season's prices confirms that Monkman's statement is misleading at the very least and a blatant spin on the truth at the worse.
Club Chairman Ivor Beeks joined the debate in the 3rd May issue of the BFP but just added more confusion. He was quoted as saying "We haven’t put our prices up for three years and now we’re getting criticised. The money has got to come from somewhere. Over the last three years, the rise has been less than inflation. Maybe people would be happier if we put them up every year".
The actual figures reveal a completely different picture. Taking the matchday entrance price for an Adult on the Valley End terrace as an example, the 2002/2003 season will see fans having to hand over £14 for the privilege of watching Division Two football. This is the third successive increase in this area of the ground with the price rising from £10 in 1999/2000, to £12 (2000/2001) and £13 (2001/2002). The vast majority of other areas follow the same trend and no area has remained fixed for the three year period in question.
The Bucks Free Press also claimed that the Club had "arrived at the new pricing structure after consulting with the club's supporters groups". Both the Official Wycombe Wanderers Supporters Association and the Independent Supporters' Club have since stated they were not 'consulted' over the rises. The paper has since printed a response from WWISC that included "At no time were we consulted and we're dismayed that WWFC seem to think that informing and consulting is the same thing. WWISC understand that price rises are inevitable but some of the increases seem to be disproportional."
This isn't the first time that the Club caused confusion, arguement and ill-feeling amongst supporters following the announcement of ticket prices. In the summer of 2000 the Club increased terrace prices by £2 just two months after claiming there would be no increase. Click here to read that story from July 2000
