CURRIE IS A GEM
(Thursday 23rd August 2001)
Darren Currie - is it too early to award The Player of the Season award? After just two home games for Wycombe, summer capture from Barnet, Darren Currie has already won the fans over at Adams Park. His skill and trickery has been the outstanding feature in Wycombe's on-off start to the season. Lawrie Sanchez isn't surprised. He told BBC Three Counties Radio "He's obviously a quality player. He get's crosses in and that's an area where we weren't very good at last year. He's come to add that to our game and his free kicks will trouble the 'keeper as well."

Wycombe's £200,000 fee for the former Underhill maestro is already looking like the best piece of business down Hillbottom way since Keith Scott was packed off to Reading and another Barnet favourite, Sean Devine, took his place.

On leaving Barnet, Currie said "I still have a burning desire to play at the highest level. It's a brand new start for me and I am looking forward to it."

Lawrie Sanchez captured Currie ahead of string of other Club's. "A lot of people looked at him for a long time. He's always been considered one of the best players in the Third Division and hopefully we'll give him the stage where he can prove he's one of the best players in the Second Division," commented the Wycombe boss.

Terrace stalwarts are already ranking Currie alongside former Wycombe skill merchants including Nicky Evans and Noel Ashford both of whom also have Barnet connections at some point in their careers. "It was quite a lot of money for our Club to spend but I've got to back my judgement, I'd looked at him for a while and quite liked him. He gives us something we haven't got, he's a great techinician. He hasn't got particularly great pace but what he does with the ball is tremendous. We're hoping he does all things he was doing at Barnet and a little but more us." added Sanchez.

Currie travels to Blackpool on Saturday with Wycombe knowing that he scored Barnet's goal of the season in his hat-trick in their 7-0 victory over The Seasiders last November at Underhill. Currie has yet to score for Wycombe but that milestone can't be far away. Currie profile and career record
