1931 Amateur Cup Final
Action from the 1931 Amateur Cup Final between Wycombe and Hayes at Highbury
The most famous meeting between the sides came on 11th April 1931 in the final of the FA Amateur Cup at Highbury.
Wanderers had come through six games, scoring 22 goals, to reach their first ever Amateur Cup Final and around 4,000 Wycombe fans travelled to north London to watch the game. Club Captain John Timberlake had very sportingly declared himself unfit to play in the final.
Meanwhile Hayes, then in the Athenian League, had battled their way through nine games, all away from home. They also surprised many by beating Bishop Auckland in the semi-final.
A crowd of over 32,000, paying £2,222 in receipts, saw a close game. Wanderers played much of the first-half with ten men after right-back Sid Crump suffered a head injury (no substitutes in those days). Crump later returned and after a goalless first-half, Wycombe began to have the better of the game. After Arthur Greenwell and Alf Britnell had gone close for Wanderers, there was a scare when there were claims for a penalty after Crump had handled. The referee eventually gave a free-kick outside the area but it was a spot-kick that brought about the winning goal for Wycombe.
There were just ten minutes remaining when Hayes defender Bill Caesar handled the ball while in lay on the ground in goalmouth scramble. Bill Brown took the penalty but hit it straight at Missioners 'keeper Holding. However, the ball rebounded to Britnell, who fired home. Minutes later Captain Pat Badrick went up to collect the cup in what turned out to be Wanderers only final victory in this competition. John Timberlake was later awarded a special medal under FA ruling.
