John-Paul Kelly - two goals in Cup victory over CheltenhamWanderers Youth Team made hard work of overcoming Cheltenham Town in the First Round of the Umbro Isotonic League Cup. In a match played at Molins Sports Sports Ground, Wanderers were 3-0 up at the break but allowed the visitors to pull two goals and had to play the final 15 minutes with ten men after Nicky Beasant was red-carded for fouling the last man. However, Wanderers hung on to run out 3-2 winners and progress to the next round.
Wanderers, fielding just one Third Year scholar in the starting line-up, completely dominated the first-half. After forcing three corners in the opening eight minutes they finally took the lead after ten minutes following a bizarre incident. Wanderers were awarded an indirect free-kick inside the penalty area after Rob Tungatt's goalbound shot had been cleared off the line by a Cheltenham player who had come back onto the pitch from behind the goal following an earlier injury. The Robins player was booked and from the resulting free-kick Matty Fox's effort deflected into the back of the net off the Town wall.
Wanderers doubled the lead on 15 minutes following good work from Mark Boland, Andy Reilly and Matty Fox. The ball was eventually pushed out to the right where James Rogers sent in a low cross that John-Paul Kelly slid home at the far post.
It was Kelly who made the score 3-0 after 32 minutes with a fine individual effort - powering down the right flank and into the penalty area where he saw his initial shot blocked but followed up to convert the loose ball.
Half-time substitute Billy Harding missed an open goal five minutes after the restart following Kelly's delivery from the right before the visitors were allowed back in the game. On 66 minutes Tom Warren picked up a back pass before tucking the ball past Flower from the edge of the penalty area. Then within a minute Town were let in again when Lee Davies cut in from the left before finishing with a low shot into far corner of the net.
Nicky Beasant was unlucky to be sent-off for a foul that the referee deemed to a be clear goalscoring opportunity and it prompted a hectic final few minutes. Davies saw what looked like a certain goal cleared off the line with five minutes left on the clock but Wanderers defence held firm for a victory that will raise the confidence of the side.
