Wanderers Ladies v Thatcham Sunday 26th January 2003 Click here for Picture Gallery for this game
Last week the team were disappointed with the cup exit to Aylesbury; this week frustration set in the League as a 2-2 draw was ground out against an well organised Thatcham sideIn the cup match seven days previous we worked hard, as a team, to win the ball and try to create chances. This week we stood back for half the game and let Thatcham show us how well they can pass and move. The visitors were technically and tactically the better side, and they wanted to win the game more than we did. Their first goal came early, from a corner that we didn’t need to give away. It came in high to the near post and indecision between players on the line and Blues keeper Lou Plumridge allowed the ball to slip through and into the net. We seemed off the pace in the middle of the park and the Berkshire team made use of the time and space to set up a string of attacks. A missed tackle allowed them to get behind the defence and double the lead on the half hour. Blues made a few of chances to get one back before the break, but Thatcham’s keeper wasn’t over-worked. Manager Graham Malcolm made a couple of changes at half time, moving Jenny Kitley to left back for Nic Thorne and bringing on Karyn Atkinson, who was still nursing an injury from last weekend, but took command of the centre of the park. Wycombe woke up and started to look like they wanted to win and were prepared to do something about it! Su Oakley got away down the left, cut inside and placed her shot to make it 2-1. Not only were Thatcham not strolling any more, but we looked like we might get back into the game. Jane Graddon came on for Sophy Bowden and helped keep the pressure on, passing the ball around and retaining possession. We won a number of corners but weren’t able to convert them, Marion Lyon came close at the far post when Oakley played a low cross across the box behind the Thatcham defence. Good work down the right and another cross gave Claire Perkins a chance to equalise, but her first time shot was sliced wide. In the end it was Atkinson who smashed home Oakley’s deflected shot from the left to make it 2-2, but both teams were still looking for all 3 points. Renee Kwantes made her debut replacing the injured Perkins on the left. Elo Revans and Jenny Kitley cut out a number of diagonal balls and Plumridge was off her line quickly to clear a couple of dangerous balls and stood up well as the visitors got through 1-on-1 in the dying minutes. Oakley and Asante both came close as the clock ticked down, but a draw was a fair reflection of the game.
