Thatcham Town v Wycombe WanderersSunday 1st September 2002 Wanderers Ladies kicked off their league season with a good away win at Thatcham Town, secured by two goals from debutant Trish Easton. Wanderers dominated for much of the first half and were unlucky not to have been more than one up at half time. Sophy Bowden playing on the right combined well with Easton and Heather Scutchings to give the left back a torrid time but couldn’t find the finishes to reward the possession. On the big Thatcham Town pitch, the Berkshire side passed the ball around well and were always dangerous on the break, but Blues newly introduced back four kept their shape well and allowed very few sights of goal. Jenny Kitley came into the side at left back and player of the match Eloise Revans at right back, joining Esther Morley and Marion Lyon. Helen Scourfield moved into the centre of midfield to work with Karen Atkinson, while our third new signing Jess Bacon took the left wing. The first goal eventually came on 40 minutes after a number of shots had been parried by the keeper and Easton collected the loose ball, turned away, then cut inside and shot under the keeper. Thatcham began the second half with a couple of dozen passes before Wycombe managed to even touch the ball. When that touch came it was stand-in keeper Paula Benson who dived to collect a cross, receiving a crunching boot in the ribs for her troubles. Amy Watters came off the bench to take her place and set Blues back on track. The midfield worked hard to win and then keep possession and look for an opening to set Scutchings and Easton free. Easton’s mazey run won a penalty when she was brought down on the edge of the area, she picked herself up to convert the kick but her shot went wide and it looked like goals would remain few and far between. Norwegian Anna-Marie Moelland came on for Bowden and made a couple of chances out of nothing, but both crept the wrong side of the post. Karyn Atkinson blasted a couple of others over the bar and Thatcham’s keeper made an excellent save from Easton’s curling free. With still only one goal in it Thatcham never gave up and confident performances from the fullbacks and good teamwork down the middle were required to maintain that difference. Just as the home side began to look more threatening in the final third, a good passing move through Wycombe’s midfield set up Easton’s second goal, which she thumped home after the keeper parried an earlier shot. The difference was halfed though with ten minutes to go as a half cleared corner fell to an incoming midfield on the edge of the box whose low shot blasted through a mass of players. Thatcham heads were up and a lob from almost the same position went over the keeper and over the bar in the last few minutes, before Blues were able to take the ball to the other end of the pitch and hold out for the final whistle.
