Thame v Wanderers Ladies Sunday 6th October 2002 League Cup premilinary Round
Wanderers made heavy weather of a preliminary round league cup tie against Thame at Towersey Recreation Ground, drawing 3-3 at full time, before going on to score 5 without reply in extra time.September Player of the Month goalkeeper Louise Plumridge was one of the few players to come out of the game with any credit as she rescued the situation after a number of poor back passes. But it wasn’t the technical errors that frustrated manager Graham Malcolm so much, as the almost total disregard shown for the pattern of play that we have worked on so well in training. In spite of numerous first half chances we were only one goal up at the break and could easily have been behind; Su Oakley scoring from an Esther Morley clearance. The second half saw the equaliser which was long overdue, after a poor clearance landed with one of the best players on the field who set up a cross from the right touchline which was headed in at the far post. A misunderstanding at the back saw the home team pounce on a loose back pass to fire home and take a 2-1 lead. Wanderers levelled on 68 minutes when Oakley took the ball wide on the right, knocked it into Sophy Bowden on the edge of the box who half volleyed her first strike of the season to bring us back on level terms. A Claire Perkins corner from the right then saw a Thame defender Claire Seckington head past her own 'keeper to restore Wanderers lead with an OG.However, just when it looked like we might have scraped through in spite of a poor performance, the defence was caught square in the last minute of normal time allowing a dangerous break to become an equaliser and take the game into extra-time. The performance in the last thirty minutes did show signs of improvement and almost every decent move resulted in a goal as substitutes Jess Bacon and Jeunine Bray combined well on the left. Within three minutes of the restart Oakley converted Plumridge’s long clearance to put us ahead. Moment later Bray cut back in from the bye-line and squeezed her shot in at the near post. Wanderers took a 6-3 lead when Amanda Quintal tucked away a cross at the far post that had eluded everyone in the centre. Marion Lyon headed the ball back into the box after another corner was cleared and Oakley snapped up the keeper’s parry. The tie was wrapped up 5 minutes later when another Perkins’ corner was flicked on by Karyn Atkinson and headed home by Oakley turning 3-3 into 8-3. On Sunday 13th October the team are back in Towersey for a league fixture that must be finished in the 90 minutes!Final Score - AET Thame 3 Wycombe 8 Teamsheet: Louise Plumridge, Eloise Revans, Jenny Kitley, Esther Morley, Marion Lyon, Karyn Atkinson, Sophy Bowden, Anna Moelland, Claire Perkins, Trish Eaton, Su Oakley.
