Match report

Wycombe Wanderers v Southampton WFC - League
Sunday 31st October 2004

Su Malcolm and Lucy Dewar chase the ball versus Southampton Probably our least convincing performance of the season, but Wanderers Ladies picked up their first win at home to Southampton WFC on Sunday 31st October in a match played on The Rye.

Leah Asante opened the scoring with her first goal of the season, picking up the rebound after continuing a strong run down the left. Lucy Dewar made it two, with her first goal for the club and there were opportunities for Blues to go further ahead in the opening half hour. Player of the Match, Debbie Richards won a lot of the balls in the air and combined well with Jane Graddon to try to get the ball behind the defence. Dewar could have made it three, but held onto the ball too long, she lost out on a shooting opportunity and the ball was passed the length of the field to set up a Southampton come back in a game that really should have been finished off already. An overlap on the left provided the visitors with a chance to keep their move alive and hit a bouncing ball on the edge of the area. The shot swept over Blues’ keeper Sam Barwood into the far corner. Moments later Sophy Bowden cleared off the line and Barwood made a fine save to keep Wycombe a goal up at half time.

Panic at the beginning off the second half kept Blues in their own half for far too long as clearances fell at the feet of the visitor’s supporting players and were played straight back into the danger area. A free kick for a push 25-30 yards out saw the visitors equalise as the ball seemed to bounce out of Barwood’s gloves and the incoming forward knocked it over the line. But the keeper played a key role in Blues’ winner fifteen minutes from time, when her early goal kick found Su Malcolm wide on the left. She knocked the ball round the outside of the defender, then cut in towards the goal and coolly slid the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. Some neat combination play down the right saw Graddon set up Tina Nutt to cross, there were a couple of good through balls from Dewar and Richards but no more clear goal scoring chances.

Final Score Wycombe 3 Southampton 2
Squad: Sam Barwood, Roisin Nellis, Marion Lyon, Sophy Bowden, Esther Morley, Debbie Richards, Jane Graddon, Lucy Dewar, Leah Asante, Su Malcolm, Tina Nutt, Jodie Taylor
