Southampton Saints Youth 2 Wanderers Ladies 0 Sunday 16th March 2003 Southampton Saints Youth were already champions and Wycombe Wanderers were already runners up before a ball had been kicked, but after a disappointing performance in our previous game, a lot of pride was at stake in this final league match of the season. Manager Graham Malcolm knew the way he wanted the team to play and although there were numerous enforced changes in the line-up, everyone stuck to the task in hand and proved a point. The 3-5-2 formation, played high up the field, kept us in the game right to the end. Southampton opened the scoring immediately after the game was stopped for an injury, early in the second half and added another on 90 minutes as Blues pushed everyone forward for a freekick on the edge of the area, and were caught. But the final score was far less important than the individual and team performances. Player of the Match, Nic Thorne, and fellow defenders Esther Morley & Marion Lyon worked more effectively as a unit than they had all season. The home side struggled to adapt to the high line and were caught off-side on numerous occasions. When they did break through Lou Plumridge in goal set herself well and blocked half a dozen or more shots in the first half and another couple in the second. Su Oakley played in the centre of midfield with Elo Revans and Renee Kwantes and all three worked tirelessly to deny Saints’ midfield time on the ball. In an entertaining game Wycombe tried to condense the play and catch the home team on the break. We had only a couple of half chances in the first half, but by the final 30minutes, our improved anticipation up front gave the home side a few scares and if we could have converted any of the corners we won, it could have been the champions’ first defeat of the season. A concentration lapse in the defence at a critical moment let the home side in and the shot was comfortably slid past the advancing Plumridge. Almost immediately she was called upon to respond to a long range effort which she tipped over the bar and then had to punch the resulting corner clear. We recovered our shape and our focus and stuck to the task. Lindsey Beverley, playing her first game for Wycombe this season after starting university, helped us out as we struggled with injuries, illness and school commitments and enjoyed a good competitive game. Our best chance to score came in the 89th minute when we were awarded a free kick from the right just outside the penalty area. Sophy Bowden delivered a great ball between the goalkeeper and defenders but no-one was able to get a touch before it was cleared for a corner. The quickly taken kick was cleared first time and Southampton took advantage of the 1-on-1 on the half way line to score again on the stroke of full time.
