Match report

Louise Plumridge gathers a shot against Redbridge Raiders Wanderers Ladies v Redbridge Raiders
Sunday 8th September 2002
FA Women's Cup 1st Qualifying Round

Maybe next year Wanderers Ladies will make it past the first hurdle into the second qualifying round of the FA Cup! Drawn against higher division opposition for the third year running, we lost out to Redbridge Raiders, who play in the Greater London Premier Division, by 3 goals to 1.
They were a well organised and skilful team, as we’d expected, but perhaps we held back for the first 20 minutes to see just how good they were rather than trying to impose ourselves. However, in spells we played some good football, we nicked a late goal and could have had more.
The bright sun and long goal-kicks caused a few early problems and the visitors almost opened the scoring in the first 5 minutes as a shot from the edge of the area was deflected away from Blues keeper Lou Plumridge and looked to be spinning into the top corner, but actually hit the woodwork and was safely cleared. Plumridge stepped into the vacant keepers spot, and combined well with captain Esther Morley and the rest of the defence to tidy up loose balls over the top and was out quickly to keep the number of shots on target down to minimum.
Jenny Kitley against Redbridge RaidersJenny Kitley had another solid game at left back, heading bravely and working hard to get in a tackle if the ball was taken past her. The back four caught the visitors offside far more than they should have done and it was unfortunate that when the opening goal came we knew we’d been slow to react to the previous ball.
Just before half time it looked as though we might pull something back as lively forward Trish Eaton appeared to be tripped on the edge of the area and the free-kick was duly awarded. But the referee indicated an indirect free-kick (presumably the opponent impeded Trish’s progress) and the resulting kick which flew through a crowd of players somehow wasn’t touched, so the goal did not stand.
Amanda Quintal, back from her summer holidays started her first game of the new season and was unlucky not to have got more for her efforts as she tried to slide balls into the paths of Eaton, Heather Scutchings and Jess Bacon out on the left. Jeunine Bray came on to mark her start of the season on the right of midfield, with Anna Moelland coming into the centre during the second half. Redbridge were on top for most of the game and a second goal wasn’t against the run of play, but was again a bit disappointing as Marion Lyon got a touch on the corner swung in from the right but only managed to steer it into the path of a midfielder on the edge of the area, who guided it straight back into the net with Plumridge stranded. The game seemed over when the visitors beat the offside trap and sprinted for the neatly slotting the ball under the advancing keeper to make it 3, but Blues didn’t give up and pulled back a consolation.
Leah Asante - scored Wanderers' goalLeah Asante came off the bench to record her first goal of the season, making sure the a long ball floated in from the centre of midfield crossed the goal-line, after Kitley won the ball of the right half and set up the chance. The next few moments saw a number of chances created and a touch of panic in the East Enderers defence, but the Redbridge keeper was not to be phased and calmly collected each shot in turn to retain the 3-1 scoreline.
