Wanderers Ladies Team in action Wanderers secured a place in the County Cup third round draw with a 5-0 win over MK Wanderers in a tie played on The Rye.
In contrast with a few recent games Blues got off to a good start against the Northern Division side, Jess Bacon and Claire Perkins in particular started brightly and there were many encouraging signs. Although we had most of the play in the first half, and created a good number of half chances this was a tight game. A series of corners offered no clear cut chances but eventually Bacon’s touch at the near post allowed Atkinson to stab the ball over the line and that was all that stood between the teams for most of the game. The visitors must have thought they’d equalised almost immediately, with a shot from the edge of the area heading for the top corner of the goal, but Lou Plumridge made a great save to tip it over for a corner. At the other end, Atkinson headed over the bar a few minutes later, but that was the closest Wycombe came to extending the lead before the break.
Milton Keynes had their best spell early in the second half and Blues back four had their work cut out. Esther Morley kept the defence together as the north Bucks side pushed forward en masse, often playing three up front, and kept the number of real chances to a minimum. When an attack was broken up there was far more space for us to play and it was on the break that Bacon scored the second from wide on the left, midway through the second half. The visitors kept pushing forwards and a foul in the area gave them a spot kick with 15 minutes remaining. Plumridge took her place between the sticks, saved the penalty and cleared the ball down field to begin Blues second good spell. With the game more open now, half chances became real chances and Su Oakley added two more goals from open play. The fifth came from Oakley’s corner, knocked down by Anna Moelland for Laura Coull to calmly score on her First Team debut.
