Match report

Wanderers Ladies Reserves v Chesham United Reserves
Sunday 29th September 2002

Leah Asante - scored a hat-trickIn their first ever competitive match Wanderers Reserves opened the scoring through Leah Asante who picked up a through ball from Leanne Palfrey and wasted no time in staking her claim on the game. Chesham Reserves played a year of league football in the Southern Region prior to the County League being established and were certain favourites for the match, but Blues didn’t read the script and although the visitors equalised and then took the lead, no-one gave up. Blues keeper “Buttons” made a couple of brave saves to keep the game within Wanderers grasp and at every opportunity the team looked to keep the ball moving forwards. Before half-time Becks Meller played Asante in again down the right, who beat the keeper one-on-one to bring the scores level again. There was still another goal to come however before the break, as Buttons misjudged a through ball and was caught out of her goal, Chesham squeezed a great effort along the goal line into the far corner.
In an end to end game Laura McClean in the centre of midfield had an excellent match and the back four worked hard to keep Chesham’s chances to a minimum. Asante claimed her hat-trick slipping the ball in at the near post with the outside of her foot from Meller’s cross to make it 3-3. Meller herself hit the crossbar and Palfrey had a freekick saved but all the time the visitors could have grabbed a winner as the game opened up. The winner however came at the other end in the final couple of minutes when captain Amy Watters stepped up to take a free-kick wide on the left. She hit it sweetly and although the keeper got a touch she couldn’t prevent the ball hitting the back of the net securing all three points for Wycombe in a stunning opener.
