Match report

Wanderers Ladies v Burnham
Sunday 27th October 2002
League

Su oakley In another game of contrasting halves, the Wanderers eventually managed to pull off a 5-1 win against struggling neighbours Burnham at Wilks Park.
With kick off and a mighty following wind we started the game poorly and didn’t see too many signs of improvement till we came out again for the second half. Chances were created in the first 45 minutes, and two were scored, but even these were not really warranted by the sluggish performance. The first came after 20 minutes when Karyn Atkinson scrambled the ball over the line from close range after Jess Bacon’s cross was deflected. Bacon opened her own account at Wycombe after signing during the summer, with a volley from the edge of the area tucked just inside the near post. A nice reward for probably our best player in the first half, she played between the midfield and Su Oakley up front.
Burnham kicked off the second half, Blues played into a ferocious wind and blinding sun, and still looked like a different side though all the advantages off the first half seemed to be against us. Players seemed to want the ball and be prepared to work for it. Jeunine Bray worked hard on the right and almost immediately began to open up chances for the team on that side of the pitch. Atkinson and Jenny Kitley closed down the centre of the park more effectively and the whole team seemed to start playing together. Kitley won a loose ball in the middle, laid the ball back to Marion Lyon who knocked it forward to Oakley who made her angle and shot past the keeper to mark our improved performance with a goal. Burnham continued to threaten and misunderstanding about a freekick, which it turned out hadn’t been given, meant a freekick the other way for a handball. Lou Plumridge pulled a save out of the top drawer after a quiet spell when she hardly touched the ball and blushes were saved. A foul wide on the right gave another free kick soon after, but again the defending was well organised and Atkinson cleared. Anna Moelland came on for Claire Perkins on the left and added some calm silky skills and created a couple of good scoring chances both of which crept the wrong side of the post. Oakley scored her second goal of the second half after an interception at the back was played out a few paces and laid into her path, with a third soon after as she rounded the keeper to play the ball into an empty net and earn the vote for the player of the match.
