Wycombe Wanderers Ladies Football Team 2002-2003 Match report Burnham Ladies 1 Wanderers Ladies 1 Sunday 9th March 2003 Wycombe Wanderers Ladies secured runners up trophies for the 4th successive year with a rather lame 1-1 draw away at Burnham. The home team looked sharp and played with the passion and desire that we seem to reserve for games against teams above us in the table. Despite lying in fifth place, Burnham is the only team to have taken points off league leaders Southampton Saints Youth this season and they were determined to prove they should have finished higher. Right from the start they got to the ball first, they leaned, and pushed and nicked balls, like we had the week before against Southampton. At throws they had a player on the line, and we weren’t really prepared for the fight. The first throw was intercepted, and played through a defence that didn’t look like they had started the game yet and the home team was a goal up. It could have been more, but a vital toe from Esther Morley prevented a second after keeper Lou Plumridge was beaten. Elo Revans made an important tackle on the edge of the box and Plumridge cleared another effort with her feet. At the other end real chances were few and far between, as Oakley shot over from outside the penalty area and the keeper dived at Leah Asante’s feet as she tried to get on the end of a cross from the left. Karyn Atkinson who’d been struggling with a calf injury was brought off at half time and Nic Thorne took her place in the centre of midfield having another solid performance. The second half was better, with a swift move straight from the restart giving Heather Scutchings a chance to bring the scores level but she couldn’t steer her final shot past the advancing keeper. Jane Graddon and Renee Kwantes were brought on for Helen Scourfield and Elo Revans, as Blues moved to three at the back in an attempt to get the point we needed to secure second place. With so many injuries in the squad, they were thrown into unfamiliar positions, but gave it everything and gained valuable experience. The changes began to give us more possession in the middle and relieve the pressure at the back. On 60 minutes Jeunine Bray gave us the equaliser that we’d been looking for. Oakley’s shot from the right was parried and Bray came in late at the far post to knock it into the empty net. Scutchings worked a good position on the edge of the area, but tried to play in Jenny Kitley, who was offside when there had been the option to go on alone. Burnham also had a chance to grab the winner right at the end but it wasn’t taken and the points were shared. The performance was disappointing but in the end the result was just enough.
