Wanderers Ladies v Bracknell Town Reserves Sunday 9th February 2003
Injuries to key players over the last few weeks led to several changes in the side that took on Bracknell Town Reserves on Sunday 9th February. Heather Scutchings, who was at home from university for the weekend, played a crucial role in the 5-0 victory, scoring 2 goals and playing provider for a third.Manager Graham Malcolm chose to play a 3-5-2 formation with Paula Benson and Marion Lyon coming into the midfield and Nic Thorne playing up front with Scutchings. It was Sophy Bowden who picked up Scutchings early deflected cross, cut back inside from the byeline and pulled a ball across the face of goal for Jenny Kitley to head home for the first goal. The second resulted from Scutchings run behind the defence, as the keeper came out, she laid the ball across for Nic Thorne to finish competently. The back three of Esther Morley, Helen Scourfield and Elo Revans worked hard to win a number of freekicks for offside; it was one of these taken by Lou Plumridge that that put Scutchings in the clear again and her strong run gave her the chance to stab the ball past the advancing keeper. Bracknell’s best chance to score came from a free kick just outside the area, but as the defence shuffled out Plumridge claimed the catch at the near post and was able to launch the ball forward again. Just before the break, Revans intercepted a Bracknell throw deep in our half, laid the ball inside to Lyon who moved it on again to Bowden just inside the opposition’s half, she carried the ball to the top of the box and drove the ball past the keeper into the top right corner of the net.Tracy Surges played the second half in goal and Jane Graddon & Renee Kwantes came on for Benson and Thorne. Kitley played a pivotal role in the centre of midfield and picked up the Player of the Match award for her troubles. There were chances for most of the midfield to score at some point during the second half, but a solid performance from the Berkshire keeper prevented all but one from counting. Revans played the ball out to Kitley who played a through ball for Scutchings to convert the fifth. When Sturges charged out of her area and failed to hold onto the ball, quick thinking from Morley and Scourfield saved her blushes and preserved Blues first clean sheet since November 17th.
