Wanderers Ladies Team in action The First Team returned to action for the first time in over a month with a Quarter-Final the Berks & Bucks Women’s Cup tie at home to Aylesbury United on The Rye on Sunday 19th January and Wanderers came very close to causing an upset against a side who play 2 divisions higher.
Wycombe took the initiative right from the kick off and saw most of the opening exchanges played in the visitors’ half. Jeunine Bray and Claire Perkins made confident starts, working hard to keep the tempo high. Leah Asante came in to partner Su Oakley up front and held up the ball well but Aylesbury’s back four kept the number of shooting chances to a minimum and their long clearances meant Wanderers always had to play the ball forward from the back and were open to long through balls. It was just such a ball that gave Aylesbury the chance to open the scoring when the centre forward was brought down the first time she got through and duly scored from the penalty. But Wycombe were not going to lie down and fought back to equalise just before half time after Karyn Atkinson put Oakley through.
The second half saw plenty of action with Blues involved in a goalmouth scramble including three or four shots blocked at every stage. There were corners and freekicks at both ends, all were cleared. Aylesbury took the lead again after Blues defence were pulled to the right and the ball in took a bounce that landed it at the feet of the left half who could come in unmarked. Lou Plumridge was quick of her line a few minutes later to clear a loose ball on the edge of the area and made a great close range save to keep Wanderers in the game. Consecutive corners at the other end provided two good chances, the first just needed the smallest touch – but didn’t get it - the second Marion Lyon kneed just past the far post. Leah Asante finally made it 2-2, when she picked up Oakley’s deflected shot from the left and steered it past the Ducks’ keeper. Jenny Kitley worked hard the whole game to try and prevent the visitors any time in the midfield and combined well Atkinson and her replacement Sophy Bowden who hit the bar with ten minutes to go. Another corner was headed off the line and the game looked to be heading to extra time, when Aylesbury played another long ball through. Plumridge came out but her clearance was played straight back in and two experienced players outwitted two less experienced defenders to finish the game with less than three minutes to go.
