Peter Holsgrove - goalscorer at Brisbane RoadWith the entire First Team squad having a day off as a recovery measure for the FA Cup tie at Leicester it was quite possibly the youngest ever Wanderers Reserve XI that faced Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.
Despite their age, however, they earned a well deserved draw and it could have been better after Peter Holsgrove had given Terry Gibson's lad a first-half lead.
Holsgrove was playing up front alongside Leeyon Phelan and the duo looked comfortable together amongst the sub 20 year old side.
Within the first minute Youth Team prospect Lewis Cook forced a good save from ex-Colchester 'keeper Scott Barrett but the home side responded when Colin Tate went close with a free header and the same player saw a chance cleared off the line by Jack Smillie after a defensive mix-up.
A Holsgrove/Phelan combination combined in the 28th minute  - Phelan heading wide at the far post from Holsgrove's ball from the right. But it was Holsgrove who was target three minutes before the break when the picked up Cook's cross from the left before evading two defenders and then blasting past the despairing dive of Barrett.
With confidence on a high, The Wanderers looked to be getting on top and nine minutes after the break it could have been 2-0 when another run by Cook ended with Barrett turning the resulting shot over the bar.
The O's equaliser was a scappy affair. A long ball down the middle caught out the centre of The Wanderers defensive and Tate was there to lob the ball over Steve Williams. Tate was within a couple of inches of giving his side the lead two minutes later when his 25 yard effort hit the top of the Wycombe crossbar with Williams beaten.
The last real chance of the game came in the 68th minute when Phelan smashed an effort just over The O's bar after the ball had fell kindly in the box. It was the home side who had the better of the play in the closing stages with substitute Tommy Morgan looking usual. However, considering that the Wanderers Youth Team had lost 5-1 to The O's in the Football League Youth Alliance just two months before this fixture, this was a good performance from the Wanderers youngsters.
