The
Reserve XI returned another disappointing result as Keith Ryan continued
his comeback from injury. But there was a set-back for 'Rhino' when he
had to be substituted just two minutes into the second-half with a thigh
problem that needed a heavy ice-pack to quell.
After the previous week's 5-1 reverse to Brighton there was little to
get excited about as Wycombe put in another lacklustre display, albeit
against a fairly strong Rovers side. Ex-Wycombe loan player Mark Foran
was joined by ex-QPR and Reading midfielder, Mike Meaker, ex-QPR defender
Trevor Challis and ex-Portsmouth defender Robbie Pethick in the Rovers
line-up. Their experience proved far too strong for The Wanderers, with
forwards Danny Senda and Peter Holsgrove being completely snuffed out
by veterans Pethick and Foran.
A dull first half saw Meaker miss two good chances for Rovers while Wycombe
failed to register a single worthwhile effort on goal. The inevitable
winning goal came after 66 minutes when Matt Brady lost possession in
his own half and Christian Parker latched on to convert past Westhead
- the ball going in off the post. Wycombe's only noteworthy effort came
eight minutes from time after a strong run from Leeyon Phelan saw Senda
chip in for Holsgrove but with only the 'keeper to beat from 18 yards,
the Wanderers Youth Teamer pulled his shot wide. The high point of the
match for Wycombe was when 16 year old Jonny Dixon made his Reserve Team
debut after he came on as a late substitute. Dixon has been a prolific
scorer for the Youth Team and it will interesting to follow his progress
at a higher level.
