Berks and Bucks
Senior Cup
Quarter-Final
Wycombe Wanderers 2
Aylesbury United 0
Tuesday 21st February 2006
Second half goals from Charlie Griffin and Ikechi Anya saw Wanderers overcome Aylesbury United 2-0 in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup Quarter-Final at Buckingham Road.
Goalscorer Griffin was one of three players in the Wanderers side returning from injury. The others were Keith Ryan who played the first half to make his first appearance of the season while Will Antwi took his place for the second period to make his first showing in a Wycombe since his free transfer from Aldershot Town in the summer. Elsewhere, Wanderers included new Youth Team recruit Josh Mulvany. The 16 year old midfielder has been on work experience from Southampton for the past month and Wanderers have recently agreed to take over his apprenticeship for the next two years.
On a bitterly cold evening in Aylesbury, it was the Wanderers who always looked the stronger of the two sides. In a fairly timid first half it was the returning Griffin had the two best chances with his first being blazed wide of the target but his second, as the half drew to a close, seeing an outstanding save from Ducks 'keeper Reece Kirk.
The tie livened up in the second half with Aylesbury's best chance of the evening coming on 52 minutes when Leon Gutzmore was left with a only Steve Williams to beat but the ball bobbled at the crucial moment and the chance went begging. Within a minute Wanderers were ahead Griffin weaved through the Aylesbury defence from the edge of the box before taking the ball to the 'keepers left and shooting home.
Antwi will count himself unlucky not to get on the scoresheet on the hour mark when he clipped Anya's corner from the left towards the far corner of the goal before seeing the ball cleared off the line. A neat pass from Andy Savage to Griffin on 64 minutes saw the latter fire over but three minutes later the tie was sealed when the Aylesbury defence were embarassed by an Anya free-kick from the left wing that sailed straight into the far corner of the net. Aidan Collins claimed a final touch off his chest but he thought better of it after seeing the celebrations aimed towards Anya.
Wanderers will be at home to Beaconsfield SYCOB in the Semi-Final with the tie set to take place at Adams Park (on Monday 13th March, kick-off 7.30pm) despite the Aylesbury tie being switched as a precautionary measure to protect the Adams Park surface. The other Semi-Final is between Slough Town and MK Dons with the final due to take place at Adams Park on Monday 1st May - kick-off 3pm.
